What does an attorney do?

Attorneys perform a variety of legal tasks on behalf of their clients. In this career, you advise your clients on the intricacies of the law and how it may affect them personally or how it may affect their business. You also perform complex legal research in preparation for a case or arbitration. You conduct interviews, review case law, and prepare oral arguments. Attorneys work in a variety of specific fields, including criminal law, constitutional law, corporate law, and environmental law, to name just a few. You can work for a law firm or as a legal advocate for an organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Attorney, you generally need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, admission to the state bar, and strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills. Familiarity with legal research databases (such as Westlaw or LexisNexis), case management software, and e-discovery tools is commonly required. Outstanding interpersonal communication, negotiation, and critical thinking skills set exceptional attorneys apart. These skills are crucial for interpreting laws, building persuasive cases, and effectively representing clients’ interests in legal proceedings.

What are some common challenges attorneys face when managing multiple cases simultaneously?

Attorneys often juggle several cases at once, each with different deadlines, complexities, and client needs. Time management and organizational skills are crucial to ensure that all cases progress smoothly and nothing falls through the cracks. Frequent communication with clients, paralegals, and other legal professionals is required to coordinate schedules, gather evidence, and meet court filing deadlines. Utilizing legal management software and maintaining detailed calendars can help attorneys stay on top of their caseloads and reduce stress.

Job description

Johnson Mark is seeking an accomplished, strategic, and people-focused Lead Litigation Attorney to lead and elevate our litigation practice.

As the firm's senior litigation leader, you will establish the strategic direction of the litigation department while partnering closely with executive leadership to deliver exceptional client outcomes, strengthen operational excellence, develop future legal leaders, and support the firm's continued growth.

The successful candidate combines exceptional legal judgment with strong business acumen, outstanding leadership skills, and a passion for developing high-performing teams. This individual will serve as a trusted advisor to both clients and executive leadership while building scalable processes that enable long-term success.

If you are looking for an opportunity to make a lasting impact on a rapidly growing law firm, we'd like to meet you.

Position Summary

The Lead Litigation Attorney is responsible for the overall leadership, performance, and strategic direction of the firm's litigation department. This role oversees attorneys and litigation support staff, develops litigation strategy, maintains key client relationships, improves operational performance, and ensures the highest standards of legal quality and compliance.

This position requires an experienced litigation leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys building teams, improving systems, and solving complex legal and operational challenges.

Primary Responsibilities

Litigation Leadership

  • Lead complex litigation matters from inception through resolution.
  • Develop and execute litigation strategies that maximize client outcomes while effectively managing cost and risk.
  • Review and provide guidance on significant pleadings, motions, settlement strategies, hearings, and trial preparation.
  • Ensure consistency, quality, and excellence across all litigation activities.
  • Identify emerging legal trends and proactively adapt litigation strategies.

Client Leadership

  • Serve as the primary legal advisor for key client relationships.
  • Build trusted partnerships through exceptional communication and responsiveness.
  • Present litigation strategies and legal recommendations to sophisticated clients.
  • Effectively manage client expectations while delivering outstanding service.
  • Collaborate with clients to continuously improve litigation outcomes.

Legal Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, court rules, ethical obligations, and firm policies.
  • Identify operational and legal risks before they become issues.
  • Develop training and quality assurance programs that improve legal consistency.
  • Partner with Compliance and Operations teams to strengthen firm-wide governance.
  • Support internal audits and ongoing quality improvement initiatives.

Compensation

This is a full-time, exempt position with an annual salary range of $175,000–$225,000, depending on experience, demonstrated leadership ability, qualifications, and overall fit for the role.

Johnson Mark believes exceptional performance should be recognized and rewarded. Compensation growth and advancement opportunities will be based on leadership impact, department performance, achievement of strategic objectives, and overall contributions to the continued success of the firm.

Work Location

Johnson Mark strongly prefers this position to be onsite, allowing for close collaboration with executive leadership, attorneys, and litigation support teams.

However, we recognize that exceptional talent is not always local. Remote or hybrid work arrangements may be considered for highly qualified candidates whose experience, leadership capabilities, and qualifications make them an outstanding fit for the role.

Why Johnson Mark?

Johnson Mark is a rapidly growing, technology-driven law firm committed to operational excellence, innovation, and exceptional client service. We believe our people are our greatest competitive advantage and strive to create an environment where talented professionals can lead, grow, and make a meaningful impact.

As our Lead Litigation Attorney, you will have the opportunity to influence the direction of our litigation practice, develop future legal leaders, and help shape the long-term success of one of the industry's premier law firms.

If you are an experienced litigation leader who is passionate about leadership, operational excellence, client service, and building exceptional legal teams, we encourage you to apply.

Requirements
