Assistant Attorney General - Education
The Office of the Utah Attorney General, Education Division, is seeking an attorney to provide comprehensive legal services across multiple agencies, including primarily the Utah State Board of Education, the Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind, the Utah State Charter School Board, and the University of Utah (collectively "Education Division Clients"). The attorney will also engage in other responsibilities assigned by the Office of the Utah Attorney General. The position is located in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent legal research abilities, excellent writing and advocacy skills, outstanding legal acumen, excellent and effective communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and a willingness to learn diverse areas of law.
Responsibilities
- Provide written and oral legal advice to Education Division Clients.
- Litigate matters that are not covered by the Utah Division of Risk Management.
- Represent Education Division Clients at formal and informal hearings, trials, grievance hearings, negotiations, mediations, and other matters.
- Conduct legal research and analysis, gather evidence, respond to questions and/or complaints, explain policies and procedures, and facilitate resolutions as requested by Education Division Clients.
- Provide legal advice and guidance on data privacy and GRAMA issues.
- Conduct legal reviews of policies and rules.
- Draft and negotiate contracts.
- Oversee the development, drafting, amendment, and implementation of administrative rules.
- Monitor proposed legislation and advise on impacts to Education Division Clients.
- Attend various board, committee, and department meetings and work closely with senior leadership.
- Provide hearing officer and investigation services.
- Provide legal review, analysis, and best practice advice to Education Division Clients to minimize risks associated with public and higher education institutions and systems.
- Attend CLE and other learning opportunities to advance the Education Division's knowledge and skills.
- Provide other legal services as directed.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- A Juris Doctor degree.
- An active membership in the Utah State Bar by the end of the probationary period.
- The qualifications for admission to the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah.
- A minimum of five years of legal experience (state or federal clerkships may help satisfy this requirement). Education, employment law, litigation, compliance, and related experience will be considered.
- The ability to travel as required.
- A commitment to ethical legal practice and public service.
