What does an attorney do?

Attorneys perform a variety of legal tasks on behalf of their clients. In this career, you advise your clients on the intricacies of the law and how it may affect them personally or how it may affect their business. You also perform complex legal research in preparation for a case or arbitration. You conduct interviews, review case law, and prepare oral arguments. Attorneys work in a variety of specific fields, including criminal law, constitutional law, corporate law, and environmental law, to name just a few. You can work for a law firm or as a legal advocate for an organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Attorney, you generally need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, admission to the state bar, and strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills. Familiarity with legal research databases (such as Westlaw or LexisNexis), case management software, and e-discovery tools is commonly required. Outstanding interpersonal communication, negotiation, and critical thinking skills set exceptional attorneys apart. These skills are crucial for interpreting laws, building persuasive cases, and effectively representing clients’ interests in legal proceedings.

What are some common challenges attorneys face when managing multiple cases simultaneously?

Attorneys often juggle several cases at once, each with different deadlines, complexities, and client needs. Time management and organizational skills are crucial to ensure that all cases progress smoothly and nothing falls through the cracks. Frequent communication with clients, paralegals, and other legal professionals is required to coordinate schedules, gather evidence, and meet court filing deadlines. Utilizing legal management software and maintaining detailed calendars can help attorneys stay on top of their caseloads and reduce stress.

What is the difference between Attorney vs Paralegal?

Job description

We are a boutique litigation practice located in the Belltown/lower Queen Anne area.

Our practice is largely civil defense but we represent plaintiffs in complex litigation matters as well. We are seeking a self-motivated attorney to join our firm and work closely with our partner Shellie McGaughey on a wide variety of complex civil litigation issues. The position involves participating directly in jury trials, motions, and all aspects of practice. Our firm has a large number of complex, high profile cases. Media attention is not unusual for some of our trials.

We have a great office in a charming 100 year-old loft building. The neighborhood is near many fun restaurants and Seattle Center. We even have office electric scooters to go take a break: Pike Place market is only 10 minutes away by scooter.

As a smaller boutique practice the only limit to what you can do is your own ability. We do not have a rigid associate-partnership track where you are only allowed to do certain things after a certain amount of time. A person who is self-directed will thrive and be given increasing responsibilities.

We greatly value mentorship and enjoy working with not only newer lawyers but also the collaborative process of more experienced ones to come up with creative solutions for our clients. Given our client base we have a large variety of complex litigation matters. Every day has something new and interesting.

We offer full benefits (health insurance and retirement). We pay for all CLEs and license fees. Salary is dependent on experience but new lawyers start with a competitive salary, paid time off, and an attractive bonus structure. A salary range is required to position a position on this platform. The range stated is our general consideration for newer lawyers. However, depending on your experience, needs, and practice we are open to discussing any reasonable and flexible pay plan.

This position is open to new and more experienced attorneys. We have opportunities for attorneys at a variety of experience levels.

***Must be a current member of the WSBA and live in Washington***
