How much do NASA data scientists make?

NASA data scientists typically earn between $80,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. They often hold advanced degrees in fields like atmospheric science, data analysis, or related disciplines and work with large datasets using tools such as Python, R, or MATLAB.

Do atmospheric scientists get paid well?

Atmospheric data scientists typically earn competitive salaries that reflect their specialized skills in climate modeling, data analysis, and use of tools like Python and R. Salaries vary by experience, education, and location but generally align with other science and engineering roles, with many positions offering benefits and opportunities for advancement.

What types of projects do Atmospheric Data Scientists typically work on, and how do they collaborate with other experts?

Atmospheric Data Scientists often engage in projects such as climate modeling, air quality forecasting, and weather prediction, which require analyzing complex environmental datasets. They routinely collaborate with meteorologists, environmental engineers, and software developers to design computational models and interpret results. Working in cross-functional teams, they help translate scientific findings into actionable insights for policy makers, businesses, or the public. This collaborative environment fosters both technical skill development and a broader understanding of atmospheric science applications.

What is an Atmospheric Data Scientist?

An Atmospheric Data Scientist is a professional who analyzes large datasets related to the Earth's atmosphere, such as weather patterns, climate change, and air quality. They use statistical methods, machine learning, and computational tools to extract insights from satellite data, sensor networks, and climate models. Their work helps improve weather forecasting, inform environmental policies, and advance scientific understanding of atmospheric processes. Atmospheric Data Scientists often collaborate with meteorologists, climate researchers, and governmental agencies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Atmospheric Data Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Atmospheric Data Scientist, you need a solid background in atmospheric science, statistics, and programming, typically supported by a degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or a related quantitative field. Experience with technical tools such as Python, R, MATLAB, and familiarity with remote sensing data, GIS software, and machine learning frameworks is often required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you interpret complex data and convey findings to diverse audiences. These skills are crucial for generating accurate insights, supporting research, and informing policy or operational decisions based on atmospheric data.

Is 30 too late for data science?

Atmospheric Data Scientists can enter the field at any age, as success depends on skills, education, and experience rather than age. Many professionals transition into data science later in their careers by acquiring relevant knowledge in programming, statistics, and domain expertise. Age should not be a barrier if you develop the necessary technical skills and stay current with industry tools like Python, R, and cloud platforms.

Are atmospheric scientists in demand?

Atmospheric scientists are in demand due to increasing focus on climate change, weather prediction, and environmental monitoring. Employment opportunities are expected to grow as governments and organizations seek expertise in data analysis, modeling, and the use of tools like remote sensing and climate models.

What is the difference between Atmospheric Data Scientist vs Meteorologist?

AspectAtmospheric Data ScientistMeteorologist
Required CredentialsDegree in atmospheric science, data science, or related field; strong programming skillsDegree in meteorology or atmospheric science; often requires certification
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, data analysis centers, tech companiesWeather stations, TV stations, government agencies
Industry UsageData analysis, modeling, climate researchWeather forecasting, public weather reports

While both roles involve atmospheric sciences, Atmospheric Data Scientists focus on analyzing large datasets and developing models using programming skills, often working in research or tech environments. Meteorologists primarily forecast weather and communicate findings to the public, working in media or government agencies. The roles overlap in understanding atmospheric phenomena but differ in their core focus and work settings.

Job description

GD166 Atmospheric Data Support Scientist
Come see your career take flight at NASA.
This Atmospheric Data Support Scientist position requires a motivated and capable scientist to provide end-to-end support for the Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC), to facilitate our mission in support of NASA earth data products in particular for those related to atmospheric remotely sensed products using the suite of NASA satellites. These data products include legacy, current and future NASA Earth Science mission data (satellite and modeling), and discipline-related products. For more information about the GES DISC please visit our web site (http://disc.gsfc.nasa.gov/).
The Atmospheric Data Support Scientist responsibilities will include understanding the currently archived data at GES DISC (data formats and associated metadata), developing scientific applications such as algorithms for generating value-added products and applications to support advanced services that can be plugged into existing visualization and analysis systems, and developing tools to support interoperability for discovering, accessing, customizing, viewing, and analyzing data. We are seeking an innovative Atmospheric Scientist with a strong background in applied sciences to join our research team. Applied science focus areas include, but are not limited to, air quality modeling, atmospheric chemistry, and climate impact assessments. Candidates must possess a Master's or Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, with a specific academic or research focus on meteorology and climatology. The ideal applicant will demonstrate a proven ability to efficiently process and analyze remote sensing datasets using programming languages such as Python. Core responsibilities require extensive, hands-on experience utilizing both satellite remote sensing observations and model data, coupled with the ability to translate complex findings into accessible scientific articles targeted at non-technical audiences.
