Job description

Extreme Engineering Solutions (X-ES) is seeking a Director of Hardware Engineering to lead the development of ruggedized embedded products across a diverse set of applications. This role provides both strategic and operational leadership across multiple engineering disciplines, guiding programs from requirements definition through design, bring-up, and production release. The Director will set technical direction, ensure engineering rigor, and drive continuous improvement across PCB, Signal Integrity, Component Engineering, Power, Programmable Logic, Mechanical, and Digital Design teams. X-ES offers a high-tech environment where creative, analytical, and critical thinking are highly valued.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage and plan product development resources utilizing and improving resource capacity models.
  • Provide product planning input, both at the corporate and individual product levels.
  • Drive a culture of accountability.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction for hardware engineering teams.
  • Manage product development, innovation, and hardware engineering systems.
  • Ensure rigorous design reviews, technical audits, and compliance with internal standards, customer specifications, and contractual requirements.
  • Drive strategic initiatives, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and contribute to organizational leadership.
  • Lead team development, foster an empowered risk-based culture, and drive continuous improvement in engineering processes.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related engineering field.
  • Minimum of 13 years of relevant engineering experience with embedded products, including five (5+) years in an engineering management role.
  • Proven experience leading the development and delivery of complex embedded products for external customers.
  • Deep knowledge of embedded products and development and production processes.
  • Expertise in the oversight and optimization of engineering design tools including schematic capture, PCB design, drafting, 3D modeling, thermal management, and other related tools.
  • Knowledge of hardware development tools and methods (EDA and CAD).
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, with a proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and solve complex problems.
  • Proven ability to create high-performing teams through the mentoring and development of engineers and managers.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently.
  • Ability to work onsite from our facility located at 9901 Silicon Prairie Parkway in Verona, WI.

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering or related engineering field.
  • Experience with embedded products form factors such as VPX, COM Express, SOSA, VME, cPCI, ATCA.
  • Familiarity with military requirements such as MIL-STD 810, 461, 464, 704, 1275, DO-160, 178.
  • Experience with environmental qualification testing.
