The Baltimore Sun seeks an industrious and persistent reporter to cover news at night. This journalist will cover a wide variety of topics from traditional breaking news - including crime, fires and accidents -- to enterprise pieces, giving readers the information they want and need about the Baltimore region, and stories they can't get elsewhere.
Essential Functions
  • Report breaking news as it happens - quickly, fairly and accurately
  • Pitch and develop enterprise stories
  • Cultivate trust among a network of diverse sources
  • Collaborate with visuals, data, and audience teams to enhance stories and maximize impact. Participate in production videos and live streaming with the visuals department, as appropriate.
  • Share news, engage with and grow a network of followers on social media
  • Identify and dig into complex issues that impact the public by cultivating sources, reviewing public records, and pursuing leads
  • Ability to leverage relationships with sources to deliver content that differentiates the organization from competitors
  • Measure audience engagement and work with the audience team to grow readership.
  • This role requires evening, night and 1-weekend shift.

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • 3+ years of reporting experience at a daily news organization
  • Advanced writing skills and the ability to tell a story
  • Excellent news judgment and understanding of journalistic ethics
  • Exhibit outstanding communication skills, demonstrate initiative and exercise good news judgment.
  • Capable of managing daily, short-term and long-term assignments simultaneously.
  • Holds a valid driver's license and possesses reliable transportation.

Preferred qualifications
