What is an at home designer?

An at home designer, also known as a residential interior designer, specializes in creating comfortable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing living spaces for private residences. They work with clients to understand their preferences, needs, and budgets, then develop design plans that may include furniture selection, color schemes, lighting, and spatial arrangements. At home designers often manage projects from initial concept to completion, coordinating with contractors and suppliers to bring the client's vision to life.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an at home designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an At Home Designer, you need a solid understanding of interior design principles, spatial planning, and color theory, often supported by a degree or certification in interior design. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, or Adobe Creative Suite is commonly required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong client communication skills help set top designers apart. These competencies are vital for delivering functional, aesthetically pleasing spaces that meet client needs and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in at home design roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in at-home design roles often face challenges such as communicating effectively with clients remotely, managing project timelines without in-person oversight, and staying updated with design trends while working independently. To address these, it's important to use reliable video conferencing tools for client consultations, set clear expectations and regular check-ins, and participate in online design communities or webinars to stay current. Building a strong digital portfolio and maintaining organized project management tools can also help streamline workflow and enhance client satisfaction.

What is the difference between At Home Design vs Interior Decorator?

AspectAt Home DesignInterior Decorator
CredentialsOften requires design certifications or related educationMay not require formal credentials, focus on aesthetics
Work EnvironmentPrimarily residential, working directly with homeownersResidential or commercial spaces, often freelance or employed by firms
Industry UsageDesigning entire home layouts and conceptsDecorating and accessorizing existing spaces

At Home Design involves creating comprehensive interior plans and layouts, often requiring formal training. Interior Decorators focus on enhancing existing spaces with furniture, color schemes, and accessories. While both roles aim to improve home aesthetics, At Home Design is more about planning and structure, whereas Interior Decorator emphasizes decoration and styling.

Can at home designers work from home?

At home designers can often work remotely, using digital tools like design software and communication platforms. Their work environment typically depends on client needs and project requirements, making remote work feasible for many in the field.

How do I become an at home design?

To become an at-home designer, you typically need a background in interior design or a related field, along with skills in space planning, color theory, and design software like AutoCAD or SketchUp. Gaining experience through internships or freelance projects and obtaining relevant certifications can also enhance your qualifications for working remotely in this field.

Job description

We believe power is a promise - a shared commitment to be there for others when it matters most. For more than 65 years, we've turned big ideas into solutions that help protect homes, strengthen businesses and build a more resilient, efficient, sustainable energy future. Ready to Power a Smarter World with us? Generac Home is hiring for a Senior Electronics Design Engineer. In this role as part of the Home Interconnects & Interconnect Controls team you will be responsible for interconnecting sources and loads across Generac’s product portfolio. We own controls and hardware that tie generators, energy storage, transfer switches, load-management devices, and metering together into a coordinated home energy system. As a Senior Electronics Design Engineer, you will own and drive the board architecture for our interconnect products - from power-conversion, metering, and control architecture through verification and production. This is an ownership role, not a pure execution one: you will set technical direction, make the architecture and component-selection decisions, and partner closely with firmware, mechanical, manufacturing, and test engineering to bring robust, cost-effective products to market.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Own and design and validate analog, digital, and mixed‑signal circuits for power conversion, power management, embedded control, communications, sensor interfaces, and precision AC voltage, current, and power measurement, including revenue‑grade metering and calibration. Perform schematic capture, component selection, simulation, PCB design reviews, and hardware debugging. Apply functional safety and safety‑critical design principles throughout, including DFMEA and compliance with standards such as UL 991. Drive Design for Excellence (DFx) - Manufacturability, test, reliability, and cost. Support manufacturing and production at scale - resolving production issues and root‑causing hardware failures across development, validation, manufacturing, and the field. Work with suppliers to evaluate components and resolve technical issues. Collaborate with firmware, mechanical, manufacturing, quality, and test engineering to deliver robust, cost-effective products. Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership through design reviews, design standards, and architecture decisions.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or related discipline. 5+ years of experience in mixed‑signal electronic hardware design & product development. Experience designing products through full product development cycles and into production. Hands‑on experience with power‑conversion design (AC‑DC and/or DC‑DC) and microcontroller‑based embedded control systems. Demonstrated experience owning and driving board‑level architecture - defining partitioning, interfaces, and design tradeoffs - not solely executing schematic and layout to a given spec. Knowledge of AC voltage, current, and power measurement, including revenue‑grade metering and the associated accuracy and calibration considerations. Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout review Experience debugging complex electronic systems using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other laboratory equipment.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline. 7+ years of experience developing electronic products for high volume manufacturing. Experience with a range of communication protocols (CAN, UART, SPI, I²C, Ethernet, USB) and related hardware. Experience with hardware validation, reliability testing, and regulatory compliance. Familiarity with simulation tools for analog, power, and signal integrity analysis. Experience with Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Test (DFT), Design for Reliability (DFR), and Design for Cost (DFC). Familiarity with automated test development and fault injection techniques. Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively on cross functional teams. Experience with renewable energy, battery systems, power electronics, or RF design is strongly preferred, given the residential energy focus of our products.

This position includes a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans; life, long‑term disability, flexible, spending and health savings accounts, accrued paid time off, eight paid holidays, 2 floating holidays and 401(k) retirement benefits.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion, the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend, or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job are typical of frequent and continuous computer‑based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

#LI-HR1 "We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law."

We believe power is a promise - a shared commitment to be there for others when it matters most. For more than 65 years, we've turned big ideas into solutions that help protect homes, strengthen businesses and build a more resilient, efficient, sustainable energy future. Ready to Power a Smarter World with us? As one of the leaders and largest suppliers of power generation equipment and technology, the work we do touches millions of lives. Employees at Generac are encouraged to be innovative and are valued as an integral part of our global team. Our challenging goals develop knowledgeable employees dedicated to helping continue Generac’s success. Generac provides individuals the opportunity to work in a fast‑paced agile work environment where their work makes a difference in people’s lives and their own.
