The BNSF Police department is dedicated to ensuring the security and safety of the company's vast network of rail operations. This department employs comprehensive strategies and state-of-the-art technology to safeguard the transportation of goods, prevent theft, and mitigate risks associated with railway operations. Role Description
Our Special Agent in Charge positions for the Special Response Team (SRT) are critical to the successful stand-up and execution of our SRT mission, which is focused on high-risk response, critical infrastructure protection, and system-wide crime reduction. They provide strategic and operational leadership for the BNSF Police SRT, ensuring the safe, effective, and compliant execution of highrisk rail security operations. Direct, coordinate, and support SRT Special Agents in the planning, deployment, and completion of special operations to protect BNSF personnel, assets, and critical infrastructure.
Key responsibilities may include:Â
- Lead, supervise, and evaluate SRT Special Agents, ensuring operational readiness, training compliance, and adherence to BNSF Police standards.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute highrisk special operations including railspecific countertrespass initiatives, critical infrastructure protection, warrant service, dignitary/asset protection, and emergency response.
- Manage daily schedules, assignments, deployment rosters, and field operations while maintaining realtime situational awareness of SRT activities across the network
- Serve as onscene or tactical commander during SRT deployments, coordinating with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners.
- Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and departmental policies, including useofforce standards, evidence handling, and operational documentation.
- Oversee procurement, maintenance, and accountability of specialized tactical equipment, vehicles, and protective gear.
- Develop operational plans, threat assessments, and afteraction reports to support continuous improvement and risk mitigation.
- Provide subjectmatter expertise on railspecific tactical operations, critical infrastructure vulnerabilities, and emergency response protocols.Â
- Participation in nationallevel rail security exercises and joint operations.

Daily work is conducted in a safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions, walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.Â

Basic Qualifications:
- Must meet peace officer commissioning standards in state in which this job is posted and be commissioned as such and maintain a valid State Peace Office License in that state.Â
- 18 months of successful experience as a full time peace officer with a city, county, state federal or railroad law enforcement agency.
- Minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including at least 3 years in tactical, special operations, or highrisk response roles.
- Prior tactical team experience (SWAT/SRT or equivalent).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience directly leading police team members.
- Must be willing and able to travel frequently, work irregular hours, and have 24/7 oncall availability.
- Proven leadership experience with demonstrated responsibility for personnel and operations.
- Strong knowledge in patrol and tactical operations including relevant industry best practices and applicable case law.
- Strong operational decision-making and command presence in high-risk environments.
- Experience conducting or leading highrisk operations (e.g., warrant service, barricaded subjects, critical infrastructure protection, railspecific tactical deployments).
- Experience coordinating multiagency operations and working with federal partners (FBI, DHS, TSA, local agencies).
- Advanced tactical operations knowledge (breaching, rapid rail response, lowvisibility operations, surveillance, and highrisk arrest procedures). Â
- Strong leadership, decisionmaking, and crisismanagement skills.
- Ability to develop operational plans, conduct threat assessments, and manage complex field deployments.
- Proficiency in railspecific safety protocols, rightofway operations, and critical infrastructure security. Â
- Strong communication skills for briefing executives, coordinating with agencies, and directing field personnel.
- Ability to manage confidential information and sensitive law enforcement intelligence.
- Must meet BNSF Resource Protection Solutions Team standards as a Special Agent.
- Valid driver's license.
- Firearms qualification per BNSF Police standards.
- Must be able and willing to use the company's computer system for creating reports and databases.
- Must be physically and psychologically fit, able to successfully pass any required company evaluations and pass an extensive background investigation.
- Must have broad knowledge of railroad industry and operations; particularly as it relates to handling emergency situations such as derailments, load securement, and like events.
- Must have a broad knowledge of criminal law and procedures.
- Must be able to successfully lead people, often in a stressful critical-event environment.
- Must be able to meet any government or Company training and retention standards.
- Must live or be willing to relocate within 50 miles of designated work location.
- Ability to perform patrol duties when needed.
- High School diploma or GED.Â

- Bachelor's degree.
- Master's degree.
- Tactical certification:
- SWAT / SRT Operator certification - Tactical Command or Incident Command (ICS 300/400) - Breaching, tactical medical, or railspecific tactical response certification.
- Successful completion of senior police professional development courses
- For example: FBI National Academy, Senior Management Institute for Police, Southern Police Institute, Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command, etc.
- Completion of basic SWAT/SRT school.
- Knowledge of BNSF rail network operations and safety protocols.
