Asynchronous Internships information

What skills and qualifications are needed for an asynchronous internship?

To thrive in an Asynchronous Internship, you need strong self-management, time management, and communication skills, along with relevant academic background or coursework in your field. Familiarity with project management tools like Trello or Asana, cloud-based collaboration platforms such as Google Workspace, and sometimes industry-specific software is often required. Proactive communication, adaptability, and the ability to work independently are standout soft skills in this setting. These skills ensure productivity, accountability, and successful collaboration despite the lack of real-time supervision or interaction.

What is an asynchronous internship?

Asynchronous internships are internships where interns complete tasks and projects on their own schedule, rather than adhering to set work hours or attending live meetings. Communication with supervisors and team members typically happens through emails, recorded videos, or messaging platforms, allowing for flexibility across different time zones or personal schedules. This type of internship is especially popular for remote work, enabling students or professionals to gain experience without needing to be physically present or online at the same time as their colleagues.

What is the difference between Asynchronous Internships vs In-Person Internships?

AspectAsynchronous InternshipsIn-Person Internships
Work EnvironmentRemote, flexible scheduleOn-site, fixed schedule
Required CredentialsBasic skills, often no specific certificationsSimilar credentials, sometimes requiring specific coursework
Industry UsageCommon in tech, digital marketing, remote-friendly fieldsCommon across most industries, especially corporate and non-profit
Search & Comparison IntentFocus on flexibility, remote workFocus on on-site experience, networking

Asynchronous internships offer flexible, remote work options suitable for students seeking to balance other commitments, while in-person internships provide hands-on experience with direct supervision. Both types are valuable, but they cater to different preferences and career goals.

How do asynchronous internships structure communication and collaboration with supervisors and team members?

Asynchronous internships usually rely on digital tools such as project management platforms, emails, and messaging apps to facilitate communication since interns and supervisors may be working in different time zones or on different schedules. Regular check-ins are often scheduled weekly or biweekly, and clear documentation of tasks and expectations is common. Interns are expected to be proactive in updating their progress and reaching out with questions. While real-time meetings may be rare, detailed written feedback and collaborative documents ensure that everyone stays aligned and productive.

Job description

About the Team
OpenAI's mission is to ensure that AGI benefits all of humanity. The Business Systems team helps make that mission possible by building the internal products and platforms that allow OpenAI to operate with speed, reliability, and care.
We build internal applications and workflows for Finance and Supply Chain. Our work spans product discovery, React and TypeScript interfaces, Python services and APIs, data models, workflow orchestration, enterprise integrations, and the systems that connect people to systems of record. We work directly with the people who use these products and care about correctness, permissions, auditability, and production reliability.
Examples of our work include building an integration platform for supply chain integrations, integrations with Oracle Fusion and Zip, contract intelligence applied to B2B revenue recognition, and Temporal-based agentic workflows for credit checks, duplicate bank detection, and invoice triaging. We turn these efforts into reusable patterns that can support many workflows, rather than one-off automations.
About the Role
We are looking for Product Engineers to build internal applications end to end. This role spans product discovery, user experience, frontend, backend services, data models, workflow orchestration, and integrations with order management, fulfillment, and supply chain systems. You will take a problem from a first conversation with a Finance or Supply Chain partner through design, implementation, rollout, and production support.
Strong candidates combine product judgment with engineering depth. You should be comfortable moving between a React interface, a Python API, a durable workflow, and an integration with an enterprise system. You should be able to ship a useful first version quickly while building the foundations for reuse, security, and long-term maintainability. Direct AI experience is helpful, but the core requirement is strong product engineering judgment and reliable execution.
In This Role, You Will
  • Own the full product lifecycle for internal applications, from understanding the problem and shaping the solution through implementation, rollout, measurement, and ongoing improvement.
  • Build useful, clear internal user experiences with React, TypeScript, and modern web technologies, backed by well-designed Python services and APIs.
  • Design integrations with Oracle Fusion, Zip, and other enterprise systems, including order management, fulfillment, and supply chain APIs. Own API contracts, authentication, permissions, validation, data mapping, and safe writes to systems of record.
  • Build durable workflows and agentic systems using Temporal or similar workflow technologies, with appropriate handling for retries, idempotency, human approval, audit logs, observability, replay, and backfill.
  • Apply AI models, tool use, and agents to business workflows where they create real value, with clear validation, evaluation, human review, and operational safeguards.
  • Work directly with Finance and Supply Chain partners to understand their workflows, identify high-value problems, and turn ambiguous requirements into simple, dependable products.
  • Own production quality through testing, monitoring, incident response, security reviews, and thoughtful operational support.
  • Identify patterns across products and contribute reusable application, integration, and workflow building blocks that make future work faster and safer.

Your Background Might Look Something Like
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, excluding internships, with a track record of shipping production software.
  • Experience building products or internal tools from idea to production, including making tradeoffs with incomplete or changing requirements.
  • Strong Python experience and comfort building backend services and APIs; experience with FastAPI or similar frameworks is helpful.
  • Proficiency with React, TypeScript, and modern web development, or a strong willingness to work across the stack.
  • Experience with relational databases such as Postgres or MySQL and sound data modeling judgment.
  • Experience designing integrations, distributed systems, asynchronous workflows, or order, fulfillment, and supply chain APIs that must handle failures and retries safely.
  • Experience with Temporal, queues, event-driven systems, MCP connectors, AI agents, or evaluation systems is a plus, but not required.
  • Care deeply about product quality, reliability, security, performance, and the experience of the people who use the software.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineers, application owners, data engineers, and business partners.
