Job Summary
Shotgun Sports Head Coach (co-curricular competitive club sport) is responsible for organizing and overseeing team practices, recruiting new students, managing team events and enhancing the overall competitiveness and success of the team.
Essential Duties
Coaching:
  • Organize and oversee a standardized and regimented practice schedule for the team.
  • Identify points of development for all team members in all disciplines.
  • Develop plans and techniques to improve skills and competition results.
  • Create curricula for mental development to improve focus, confidence, and success in practice and competition environments.

Recruiting:
  • Develop a recruiting schedule for Texas and other national events.
  • Represent ASU and the Shotgun Sports program at events, providing information to potential students and parents.
  • Adhere to established recruitment goals and quotas.
  • Organize and highlight recruit signing events.
  • Forecast student graduation rates and develop recruiting strategies to fill gaps created by graduation within the team dynamics.

Team Management:
  • Manage team budget and fundraising events.
  • Plan and execute team events and competitions.
  • Procure team equipment, including vests, ammunition, and other necessary items.
  • Handle registration, travel plans, accommodations, and team meals for competitions.
  • Maintain communication with parents, donors, and home club relations.

Advising:
  • Conduct new member orientation and classroom tours prior to the start of the semester.
  • Review grades and academic progress of each competitor each semester.
  • Aid in guidance and support of academic obligations of team members throughout the academic year.

Fundraising:
  • Develop and maintain sponsor relationships.
  • Grow hosted benefit and competition events.
  • Identify and leverage grant opportunities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of shotgun sports rules, coaching principles, firearm safety practices, and range operations.
  • Knowledge of NCAA, conference, university, and applicable state and federal regulations related to intercollegiate athletics and firearm use.
  • Knowledge of program administration, including budgeting, scheduling, inventory management, and fundraising principles.

Skills
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Skill in recruiting, evaluating, and selecting qualified student-athletes.
  • Skill in developing, implementing, and evaluating training programs and practice plans.
  • Skill in instructing shotgun shooting techniques, firearm safety procedures, and range protocols.

Abilities
  • Ability to coach, supervise, mentor, and motivate student-athletes while supporting their academic and athletic success.
  • Ability to safely operate, handle, and oversee the use of shotguns and related shooting equipment.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and respond effectively to safety concerns and emergency situations.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with student-athletes, recruits, staff, alumni, donors, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Competitive experience in NSCA, NSSA, or ATA, or a combination of any governing body listed.
  • High School Diploma

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven coaching and team organizational experience preferred
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Valid instructor certification from NSCA, NSSA or ATA preferred
  • Recruiting success experience preferred
  • Fundraising experience and event management experience preferred.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while coaching, supervising practices, and attending competitions.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment, ammunition, targets, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and perform repetitive motions associated with coaching activities, equipment setup, and range management.
  • Ability to maintain visual acuity sufficient to monitor shooting performance, range conditions, and safety compliance at varying distances.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, dust, and precipitation.
  • Ability to travel, including overnight travel, for competitions, recruiting activities, and other program-related functions.
