What is an Astronomy Internship job?

An astronomy internship is a temporary position that allows students or early-career professionals to gain hands-on experience in astronomical research, data analysis, or instrumentation. Interns may work with professional astronomers at universities, observatories, or space agencies on projects related to astrophysics, planetary science, or telescope operations. These internships help develop skills in programming, data processing, and scientific communication. Opportunities can be paid or unpaid and typically last for a few months during the summer or academic year.

What are the typical responsibilities of an Astronomy Intern?

Astronomy Interns often assist with data collection, reduction, and analysis, work with observatory equipment or software, and support ongoing research projects under the guidance of professional astronomers. Daily tasks may include processing telescope imagery, conducting literature reviews, and preparing reports or presentations on findings. Interns also frequently participate in lab meetings, present their work, and collaborate with graduate students and faculty.
