What is an associate tutor?

Associate Tutors are individuals who assist lead instructors or professors in delivering educational content and supporting students' learning experiences. Their responsibilities often include leading small group discussions, grading assignments, providing feedback, and offering additional help to students outside of regular class hours. Associate Tutors are commonly found in universities, colleges, and sometimes in online learning environments. They play a key role in enhancing student engagement and ensuring academic success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate tutor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Tutor, you need subject matter expertise, a relevant degree or qualification, and a foundational understanding of teaching methodologies. Familiarity with virtual learning environments (VLEs), online assessment tools, and digital collaboration platforms is often required. Strong communication, patience, and the ability to motivate and support diverse learners are standout soft skills. These skills ensure effective knowledge transfer, student engagement, and successful learning outcomes in both in-person and online educational settings.

Are associate tutors still in demand?

Associate tutors remain in demand in educational settings, especially in online and supplemental education sectors. The need for qualified tutors continues due to ongoing student support, with opportunities often requiring strong communication skills and subject knowledge. Summit Prep is hiring! Join a premier academic tutoring and college consulting company in solving some of the greatest education challenges of our generation.

This is an amazing opportunity to be part of a fast-paced environment and a dedicated, intellectually curious, and supportive team. We strive for excellence. We believe in continual improvement and recognize that the best of us are lifelong learners. We value thoroughness and an investigative nature. We embody the innovative spirit of start-up culture but with all the fine-tunings of an established and well-oiled machine.

We are currently seeking a full-time Office Assistant to handle a wide array of administrative tasks with a key client-facing role. This role is approximately 40 - 45 hours per week and is based in our office in Short Hills, NJ, with one or two days in our Bernardsville location.

We are looking for an individual who is comfortable stepping in and supporting their fellow coworkers when they are unavailable or overwhelmed. You should possess the ability to multitask while setting and maintaining complex schedules and providing administrative support. The ideal candidate for this job is client-focused, resourceful, extremely detail-oriented, diligent, and innately organized.

Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Splitting time between client-facing work (~80%) and administrative support (~20%)
  • Greeting employees, guests, candidates, and vendors warmly, helping preserve our welcoming culture
  • Answering phone calls and responding to questions from prospective students and families
  • Scheduling and maintaining daily sessions on a complex office calendar
  • Making callbacks to hold or schedule New Client Calls
  • Proctoring weekly practice tests for students
  • Handling clerical tasks such as email communication, project tracking on spreadsheets, printing test packets, inventory, and document creation
  • Managing select vendor relationships, including service requests and equipment repairs
  • Supporting the Office Manager and/or Director of Business Operations on assigned projects
  • Helping improve workflows and processes—revising procedures, creating new forms, and contributing to process improvements as the organization scales

REQUIREMENTS

Experience and qualifications

  • At least 2 years of experience as an assistant
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace (formerly G Suite)
  • 2–3 professional references (current or former managers, colleagues, or clients)

Communication

  • Superb interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including professional email etiquette with clients
  • Tact and diplomacy when working with children, parents, and staff
  • High emotional intelligence, with the empathy and composure to deliver white-glove service — even in stressful situations

Work style

  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to take direction and follow through accurately and efficiently
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Self-confidence, energy, enthusiasm, and intrinsic motivation to do excellent work
  • A drive to improve yourself, your colleagues, and the way things are done

Teamwork

  • Works well on a team: anticipates needs and jumps in to help
  • Flexible with tasks and assignments, pitching in wherever the business needs it

SCHEDULE

The schedule is Tuesday - Saturday

  • Tuesday - Thursday: 12:00 PM ET - 8:00 PM ET
  • Friday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM (or option to choose 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM, or 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM for the recurring schedule)
  • Saturday: 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM

  • You rush through tasks and aren’t in the habit of reviewing your work at least three times before finalizing
  • Working under pressure and juggling several tasks are stress triggers for you
