Under limited supervision, designs, installs, maintains, repairs, and supports specialized radio systems and communications equipment for the Durham County Sheriff's Office. This position requires a high degree of independence, technical expertise, and initiative in managing complex radio systems and networks that interface with state and local public safety agencies. Assists with the planning, design, installation, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of the Sheriff's Office radio communications infrastructure.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below represent the primary responsibilities of this position. Management may assign additional duties as needed to support operational requirements.

  • Maintain handheld radios, mobile radios, base stations, consolettes, and related communications equipment.
  • Allocate radios and accessories to agency personnel.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot radio system and equipment issues.
  • Maintain cordless microphones, chargers, and rechargeable batteries.
  • Maintain accurate records, including radio network diagrams and system documentation.
  • Serve as the Sheriff's Office liaison with Motorola and the County Radio Shop.
  • Program, rename, and configure radios as needed.
  • Coordinate and oversee radio system software updates and hardware upgrades.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of all radio equipment and accessories.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for radio-related issues and support requests.
  • Monitor and document Fail-Soft testing and system performance.
  • Inspect and maintain Bi-Directional Amplifier (BDA) systems.
  • Maintain UHF, 800 MHz, and P25 radio systems to ensure reliable communication.
  • Ensure all radio system installations comply with applicable FCC and FAA regulations and standards.
  • Coordinate vendor inspections and maintenance of microwave systems and communications towers.
  • Ensure FCC licenses remain current and compliant.
  • Maintain and manage Radio IDs and equipment assignments.
  • Maintain and manage VIPER radio IDs.
  • Review and provide technical input on City/County Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) and Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs).
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires an associateโ€™s degree in information systems, Computer Science, or related field, supplemented by two (2) years of experience providing technical assistance, systems maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Physical Demands:

Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
