What is an associate structural engineer?

Associate Structural Engineers are early to mid-career professionals who assist in designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. They work under the supervision of senior engineers to ensure projects meet safety standards, building codes, and client specifications. Their responsibilities often include creating structural drawings, performing calculations, conducting site visits, and coordinating with architects and contractors. This role serves as a key step toward becoming a licensed structural engineer and taking on more advanced project leadership.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate structural engineer?

To thrive as an Associate Structural Engineer, you need a solid understanding of structural analysis, design principles, and engineering mathematics, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering and EIT/FE certification. Proficiency with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, ETABS, or SAP2000 is essential for modeling and analyzing structures. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set standout candidates apart. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant design of structures while facilitating successful project collaboration.

What are some common challenges faced by associate structural engineers when transitioning from design to construction phases?

Associate Structural Engineers often encounter challenges when their design concepts are implemented on-site, such as unanticipated site conditions or discrepancies between plans and actual construction. Effective communication with contractors and adaptability are crucial to resolving these issues promptly. Collaborating closely with senior engineers and construction teams helps ensure that design intent is maintained while accommodating necessary field adjustments, making teamwork and problem-solving essential skills in this phase.

Our company is built around accountability, high standards, teamwork, and technical excellence. We are a driven, fast-moving team that values individuals who take ownership of their work, communicate well, and take pride in producing accurate, practical, and high-quality design documents.

We are seeking an experienced Structural Drafter / Designer to join our structural engineering team and assist with the design and production of residential and light commercial projects.

Position Overview

This is a hands-on structural design and drafting position working directly with our engineers, architects, and other design professionals.

The ideal candidate has experience preparing structural construction documents and understands how buildings are constructed—not just drafting experience. This individual should be comfortable developing structural plans and details, coordinating with engineers and architectural drawings, incorporating markups, and managing multiple projects through various stages of design.

Responsibilities

Structural Drafting & Design

  • Prepare structural construction documents for residential and light commercial projects
  • Develop foundation plans, framing plans, roof framing plans, sections, and structural details
  • Prepare and revise drawings based on engineering calculations, markups, field information, and project requirements
  • Assist engineers with the design and detailing of wood, masonry, steel, and reinforced concrete structural systems
  • Coordinate structural drawings with architectural plans and other project documents
  • Identify discrepancies, conflicts, and missing information within project documents
  • Produce clear, accurate, practical, and constructible structural details
  • Maintain drawing consistency and company drafting standards
  • Assist with structural calculations and analysis based on experience and ability

Project Coordination

  • Work directly with structural engineers, architects, designers, and project managers
  • Coordinate multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced production environment
  • Incorporate internal review comments and revisions accurately and efficiently
  • Communicate questions and potential design issues to project engineers
  • Assist with responses to contractor questions, plan review comments, and project revisions
  • Review architectural and existing construction documents to determine structural scope and requirements
  • Participate in project coordination meetings when necessary

Field & Construction Support

  • Assist with field measurements, site observations, and existing-condition documentation as needed
  • Help translate field conditions into accurate drawings and structural details
  • Assist engineers with structural evaluations, repair details, and construction-related problem solving
  • Coordinate drawings and revisions based on conditions encountered during construction

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of structural drafting, structural design, or related building design experience preferred
  • Strong AutoCAD proficiency required
  • Experience preparing structural construction documents
  • Working knowledge of residential and/or light commercial construction
  • Ability to read and understand architectural and structural construction documents
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with engineers, architects, coworkers, and other project team members
  • Ability to work independently while also taking direction and incorporating engineering review comments

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with residential structural design and detailing
  • Experience with custom homes, additions, renovations, and light commercial construction
  • Experience with Florida construction methods and building codes
  • Experience developing foundation, floor framing, wall framing, and roof framing plans
  • Experience preparing structural details for wood, masonry, steel, and reinforced concrete construction
  • Experience with structural analysis/design software such as ENERCALC, RISA, or similar
  • Experience with field measurements, existing-condition documentation, structural repairs, or building evaluations
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Drafting/Design, Architecture, or a related field is preferred but not required

What We're Looking For

  • A detail-oriented designer who takes pride in producing clean and accurate construction documents
  • Someone who can receive feedback, learn quickly, and continuously improve
  • A dependable team member who communicates clearly and follows through on commitments
  • Someone interested in developing their structural design knowledge and long term growth with the Company

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary
  • Performance and career growth opportunities
  • Health and dental insurance
  • 401(k) with employer matching
