Job description

About the Role:

Holiday Inn Express Elk Grove is seeking an experienced and highly engaged Assistant General Manager to help lead the hotel's daily operations. The property is currently undergoing renovations and is anticipated to transition to a SpringHill Suites by Marriott in 2027.

This is more than a traditional AGM position. Our General Manager also serves as the Area General Manager for two Elk Grove hotels, giving the AGM greater responsibility and visibility as the primary day-to-day operational leader at the property. The right candidate will have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact, develop a strong team, and play an important role in preparing the hotel for its next chapter.

Marriott experience is strongly preferred, particularly experience with select-service operations, brand standards, quality assurance, or hotel conversion.

What You'll Do:

As the Assistant General Manager, you will partner closely with the Area General Manager while taking a highly visible, hands-on role throughout the hotel. You will help ensure that the property delivers an outstanding guest experience, achieves its financial and operational goals, and remains prepared for its anticipated brand transition.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and operational oversight across the hotel.
  • Serve as the Manager on Duty and acting General Manager when the Area General Manager is unavailable or supporting the second Elk Grove property.
  • Lead Front Office operations, including guest service, reservations, room inventory, night audit, scheduling, and service recovery.
  • Partner closely with Housekeeping and Maintenance to ensure guestrooms and public areas are clean, safe, well-maintained, and ready for guests.
  • Conduct regular property walks, room inspections, and operational follow-up.
  • Monitor guest feedback and service scores, identify trends, and lead timely improvement efforts.
  • Recruit, onboard, train, coach, and develop team members while building a culture of accountability, teamwork, and hospitality.
  • Support daily accounting functions, including income journals, bank deposits, accounts payable and receivable, financial controls, and reporting.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, labor management, purchasing, inventory, and expense control.
  • Maintain compliance with current IHG standards, company policies, safety requirements, and applicable laws.
  • Help prepare the hotel and team for renovation milestones, operational changes, and the anticipated transition to SpringHill Suites by Marriott.
  • Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and company leadership regarding property needs and projects.
  • Respond calmly and effectively to guest concerns, staffing challenges, emergencies, and unexpected operational needs.
What We're Looking For:

The ideal candidate is a confident and resourceful hotel operator who enjoys being present throughout the property. You should be equally comfortable coaching a team member, resolving a guest concern, reviewing financial reports, inspecting a guestroom, or stepping into the operation when needed.

Qualifications include:
  • Three to five years of successful hotel supervisory or management experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of select-service hotel operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and develop hotel teams.
  • Experience managing Front Office operations, guest service, scheduling, night audit, and service recovery.
  • Working knowledge of Housekeeping, Maintenance, safety, and room-readiness standards.
  • Experience supporting hotel accounting, budgeting, forecasting, labor management, and expense control.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to balance competing priorities and follow through on commitments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and hotel property-management or accounting systems.
  • Flexibility to work varied schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency situations when business needs require.
Preferred Experience
  • Marriott hotel experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with SpringHill Suites or another Marriott select-service brand.
  • Experience with Marriott systems, brand standards, or quality-assurance inspections.
  • Experience supporting a hotel renovation, conversion, opening, or rebranding.
  • Additional experience with IHG, Hilton, Hyatt, or other nationally recognized select-service brands.

The statements listed are intended to represent the key duties and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be all responsibilities or qualifications of the job. Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry, employees may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the hotel. We are an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer and make employment decisions without regard to age, race, religion, national origin, gender, disability, veteran status, genetic information, or other protected class. Those who are ineligible to work in the United States will not be considered.
