An associate software engineer works with a team of engineering professionals and developers to improve existing software or design new applications. As an associate software engineer, your job duties include coding software, coordinating with hardware engineers to ensure that different types of technology can run the software, and helping the QA team to test software before release. Typical qualifications for the career include a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field and relevant technical experience with software applications. You also need excellent communication, coding, and analytical problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a team.

What are some common challenges faced by associate software engineers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world development teams?

Associate Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to larger, more complex codebases and learning to work within established development workflows. To thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, as well as experience using version control systems like Git, are commonly required. Job Title

Sr Server Software EngineerAbout your role

Our Employees team is dedicated to building tools that help merchants manage, schedule, and empower their workforce, optimize labor costs, and streamline team operations. As a Backend Engineer on this team, you will focus on scaling and expanding our employee management platform, shift scheduling systems, labor tracking mechanics, and integrations with industry-leading enterprise payroll and workforce management platforms. You will work closely with the Infrastructure, Product, and Design teams in an iterative, agile environment to deliver seamless merchant- and employee-facing features across multiple parts of the backend stack.

What you'll do
  • Lead the development of Clover's cutting-edge Employees platform, shift scheduling, and core backend ecosystems to drive platform evolution.
  • Design, build, and maintain highly scalable REST APIs and microservices that power our smart payment devices, merchant dashboards, and integrations with enterprise third-party partners.
  • Partner with product managers and designers to identify technical requirements, assist with realistic project planning, and translate business objectives into clean, maintainable, and extensible software.
  • Take full ownership of merchant- and employee-facing features and workforce services from initial design and development through to deployment and production monitoring.
  • Participate in rigorous system design and code reviews to ensure high code quality, security, and performance across the team.
  • Collaborate with the Infrastructure team to design data models that support large-scale, highly available workforce, shift management, and enterprise integration services.
  • Work closely with QA to develop robust test plans/strategies and participate in an on-call rotation to maintain system uptime and high availability.
  • Responsibilities listed are not intended to be all-inclusive and may be modified as necessary.

Experience you'll need to have
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Seniority: 10+ years of hands-on professional software development experience, with a proven track record of delivering complex, production-grade backend systems.
  • Core Language: Strong coding skills within the JVM ecosystem; Java is our primary language of choice.
  • Frameworks: Extensive experience building microservices and web services using Spring Boot.
  • DevOps/Infra: Hands-on experience building and deploying application containers using Kubernetes, along with practical knowledge of provisioning and managing infrastructure via Terraform.
  • Data Systems: Strong working knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases, including query optimization and schema design.
  • API Design: Deep expertise in designing and implementing robust, secure, and performant RESTful APIs.
  • Code Quality: Ability to write clean, testable, and high-performance code that easily scales with high transaction volumes.
  • Soft Skills: Superior problem-solving, debugging, and communication skills-you can explain complex technical ideas clearly and collaborate effectively across teams.
Experience that would be great to have
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, preferably Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Prior experience building workforce management, HR tech, shift scheduling, payroll, or labor optimization platforms, or developing deep backend integrations with large external enterprise software systems.
  • Knowledge of or exposure to Generative AI concepts, LLM integrations, or building AI-driven features for smart scheduling, labor forecasting, or automated workforce optimization.
  • Familiarity with leveraging modern software productivity tools and AI coding assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, advanced IDE plugins) to optimize workflow efficiency, accelerate debugging, and boost overall development output.

How you'll work:

  • This role is on-site Monday through Friday. Fiserv considers in-person collaboration to be an essential part of this role as in-person office experiences help you with your overall onboarding experience and leads to stronger productivity.
  • This role requires use of a computer and audio equipment.
