Unlike academic projects, real-world development involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, adhering to coding standards, and following agile processes. Additionally, balancing learning new technologies with delivering features on tight deadlines can be demanding. However, support from mentors and structured onboarding programs usually helps smooth this transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, as well as experience using version control systems like Git, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable software solutions, collaborating within development teams, and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies.

Is 25 too late to become a software engineer?

The associate software engineer role is open to individuals of various ages, and starting a career at 25 is common. Many successful software engineers begin in their mid-20s or later, often after gaining skills through coding bootcamps, online courses, or degree programs. Age is generally not a barrier if you develop relevant skills and gain practical experience.

SONIFI Health provides interactive services to over 30,000 rooms across 130 hospitals throughout the United States. Hospitals partner with SONIFI Health because of our vast engagement and integration expertise.

Help shape the future of healthcare technology while building your career in software engineering. We’re looking for an Associate Software Engineer who is ready to grow their technical skills, contribute to meaningful products, and learn alongside experienced engineers. This role offers hands-on experience across the software development lifecycle, with opportunities to solve real problems, work with modern cloud technologies, and build scalable solutions that support SONIFI Health’s patient engagement platform.

 What you’ll do:

Reporting to the Director of Software Engineering, this role contributes across the product development lifecycle, including requirements, design, development, testing, and deployment. You will work within a product focused engineering team to deliver well-defined features and components with guidance from senior team members, while steadily expanding your technical skills, ownership, and understanding of the broader platform.

• Design, develop, test, debug, and document software applications while delivering small to medium-sized features and technical tasks with support from experienced engineers

• Build new product capabilities, enhance existing applications, and resolve software defects across shared codebases while following established engineering standards and best practices

• Partner with software engineering, product management, project management, and testing teams to clarify requirements, evaluate technical feasibility, estimate development effort, and support successful delivery

• Write clean, maintainable, and testable code, including unit tests that address expected functionality, edge cases, errors, security considerations, and overall quality

• Apply structured debugging and problem-solving approaches to troubleshoot issues, identify technical solutions, and escalate blockers or quality concerns when needed

• Contribute to engineering documentation, team knowledge sharing, ticket management, process improvements, and discussions around technical implementation and team priorities

• Actively seek and apply feedback, collaborate with teammates, and continuously grow technical knowledge across the team’s products, architecture, domain, and development practices

 What you’ll need:

We’re looking for an early career software engineer with a strong technical foundation, curiosity, and a genuine commitment to learning and growth.

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field

• Strong foundation in software engineering methodologies, object-oriented or functional programming concepts, testing, debugging, and problem solving

• Experience with some of the following technologies: Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Django, databases, or similar modern development technologies

• Exposure to cloud based development and AWS technologies such as Infrastructure as Code, CDK, Lambda, Step Functions, SNS, or SQS

• Ability to write understandable, maintainable code and develop unit tests that account for expected functionality, edge cases, and errors

• Strong analytical, deductive reasoning, written communication, and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment

Preferred:

• Experience with REST APIs and service based application architectures

• Experience with scripting languages and development automation

• Exposure to AWS cloud services, serverless technologies, or Infrastructure as Code

• Internship, academic project, personal project, or professional experience building and troubleshooting software applications

Together, we can build your future!
