What Is an Associate Software Engineer Job Description?

An associate software engineer works with a team of engineering professionals and developers to improve existing software or design new applications. As an associate software engineer, your job duties include coding software, coordinating with hardware engineers to ensure that different types of technology can run the software, and helping the QA team to test software before release. Typical qualifications for the career include a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field and relevant technical experience with software applications. You also need excellent communication, coding, and analytical problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, as well as experience using version control systems like Git, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable software solutions, collaborating within development teams, and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies.

What are some common challenges faced by Associate Software Engineers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world development teams?

Associate Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to larger, more complex codebases and learning to work within established development workflows. Unlike academic projects, real-world development involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, adhering to coding standards, and following agile processes. Additionally, balancing learning new technologies with delivering features on tight deadlines can be demanding. However, support from mentors and structured onboarding programs usually helps smooth this transition.

Job description

About Atmosphere:
Atmosphere is the leading streaming TV platform built specifically for businesses. Unlike ad networks or signage companies, Atmosphere is the only true TV company whose first priority is to entertain television audiences outside of the home. Our content is designed to be fun, engaging, and worth watching, transforming waiting rooms, gyms, bars, and restaurants into better experiences for customers and better businesses for owners.
We are the first and only company to think about both the business owner and their customers when creating TV content. With 60,000+ venues and a global audience of over 150 million monthly viewers, Atmosphere is redefining what TV means outside the living room.
About the Role:
We're looking for a motivated Associate Software Engineer to join our engineering team in a role focused on AI-augmented software quality. You'll work at the intersection of AI tooling and defect management - using AI to triage, patch, test, and deploy fixes across our stack. You'll collaborate closely with engineering and product teams to prioritize defects, own the testing and deployment of AI-implemented patches, and help monitor and manage triage workflows for the broader engineering organization. This is a hands-on role where you'll be moving fast, learning the codebase deeply, and pushing the boundaries of what's possible with AI-assisted development.
This position will report to the Engineering Lead, and is on-site in Austin, TX! Availability to be in-office 4-5 days a week is required.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Triage and prioritize defects across the product, working with engineering and product teams to determine impact and urgency
  • Leverage AI tools to generate patches for defects and iterate on solutions
  • Own testing and validation of solutions - ensure fixes are correct, don't introduce regressions, and meet quality standards
  • Deploy fixes through CI/CD pipeline and monitor production for issues post-deploy
  • Build and improve workflows for AI-assisted defect resolution - document what works, what doesn't, and how to scale it
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers, product, and stakeholders to understand defect patterns and prioritize effectively
  • Be intrinsically motivated, naturally curious, and enjoy seeking out new problems
Requirements:
  • Bias towards simplicity
  • Computer Science degree or equivalent demonstrated expertise
  • 0-2 years of software engineering experience
  • Strong CS fundamentals including system design, data structures, and algorithms
  • Daily use of AI across the entire development lifecycle (planning, design, coding, testing, deployment).
  • Ability to read and understand code across multiple languages and frameworks
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills - you'll need to explain what you're finding and fixing to engineers and product stakeholders
Nice to Haves:
  • Experience with full-stack codebases (backend APIs, frontend, mobile)
  • Familiarity with TypeScript/NestJS, PHP/Laravel, or similar frameworks
  • Experience writing automated tests (unit, integration, e2e)
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows
  • Experience with bug tracking and triage systems
Compensation & Benefits:
  • Competitive salary
  • Company Equity
  • Company 401(k) with employer matching
  • Competitive insurance plans
  • Flexible Time Off Policy

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future employer sponsorship now or in the future.
Our Commitment to Diversity:
