What is an associate software engineer?

An associate software engineer works with a team of engineering professionals and developers to improve existing software or design new applications. As an associate software engineer, your job duties include coding software, coordinating with hardware engineers to ensure that different types of technology can run the software, and helping the QA team to test software before release. Typical qualifications for the career include a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field and relevant technical experience with software applications. You also need excellent communication, coding, and analytical problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a team.

What are some common challenges faced by associate software engineers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world development teams?

Associate Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to larger, more complex codebases and learning to work within established development workflows. Unlike academic projects, real-world development involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, adhering to coding standards, and following agile processes. Additionally, balancing learning new technologies with delivering features on tight deadlines can be demanding. However, support from mentors and structured onboarding programs usually helps smooth this transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, as well as experience using version control systems like Git, are commonly required. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable software solutions, collaborating within development teams, and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies.

Job description

Who Are We Looking For?

The Engineering team is seeking a curious, growth-oriented engineer who wants to learn how production software is built on a real product team.

You're a great fit if you enjoy building user-facing web applications, you take feedback well and ask good questions, and you want to get better at writing clean, tested TypeScript. You don't need to own a product vertical yet - you will work on well-scoped tickets with support from senior engineers, contribute to code reviews, and gradually take on more independent work.

Day-to-Day, You May Also Be Expected To:

  • Build and update React/TypeScript UI in our web-based portal for a first class 401(k) platform
  • Write and maintain unit tests for components, hooks, and helpers (Jest, React Testing Library; MSW for API mocks in the admin UI)
  • Work from Jira tickets with your squad: clarify requirements, open PRs, respond to review comments, and ship incrementally
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, and other engineers to turn specs and mockups into working UI
  • Learn our stack, coding standards, and Git/GitHub workflow with mentorship from the team

Requirements

The Necessities

  • Comfortable writing TypeScript and React (classwork, bootcamp, internships, personal projects, or 0-2 years of professional experience)
  • Familiarity with HTML and CSS, and a willingness to follow an existing component library and design system
  • Some experience writing tests (Jest, React Testing Library, or similar) - or a clear desire to learn testing as part of the job
  • Comfortable using Git for everyday work (clone, branch, commit, pull request)
  • Ability to communicate clearly, ask for help, and follow through on feedback

The Extras

  • Exposure to NestJS, Express, or another Node.js API framework
  • Experience with Material UI, React Query, or a similar component/data-fetching stack
  • Familiarity with Agile practice
  • Internship, co-op, or open-source experience on a team codebase
  • Interest in financial services or retirement products
  • CS degree or equivalent practical experience

This role will be based in our Austin office and will be part of Vestwell's hybrid in-office operation.

The expected base salary range for this position is $95K - $110K base. This position is eligible to participate in the Company Bonus Pool and is eligible to receive new hire equity in the Company. Please note that salary bands are based on NY and other similar metro areas and may differ based on where the role is ultimately hired.
