What is an associate software engineer?

An associate software engineer works with a team of engineering professionals and developers to improve existing software or design new applications. As an associate software engineer, your job duties include coding software, coordinating with hardware engineers to ensure that different types of technology can run the software, and helping the QA team to test software before release. Typical qualifications for the career include a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field and relevant technical experience with software applications. You also need excellent communication, coding, and analytical problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a team.

What are some common challenges faced by associate software engineers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world development teams?

Associate Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to larger, more complex codebases and learning to work within established development workflows. Unlike academic projects, real-world development involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, adhering to coding standards, and following agile processes. Additionally, balancing learning new technologies with delivering features on tight deadlines can be demanding. However, support from mentors and structured onboarding programs usually helps smooth this transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, as well as experience using version control systems like Git, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable software solutions, collaborating within development teams, and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies.

Job description

Associate Software Engineer at Talroo

About Us

We are honored to be recognized as a multi-award winning organization. Talroo has been consistently recognized as a Top Workplace and a Best Place to Work in Austin. We've been ranked the last five years by Inc. 500/5000 as one of the fastest growing companies in the U.S. You'll also find us on the Austin Business Journal's Fast 50 growth awards list multiple times. We're growing the right way, and we need exceptional talent to help us build upon our successful story.
Talroo is helping organizations like Uber, McDonald’s, UPS, The Home Depot, Target and more, find and hire their essential workforces. Our data-driven job and hiring event recruiting platform turns the Internet into a help wanted sign. Our pay-for-performance model enables customers to maximize efficiency, not waste spend, and hire employees faster than they could with any of our competitors.

Rather than drive customers to a destination site, Talroo uses a consumer marketing approach to deliver job opportunities to candidates where they are already spending time online. Similar to what Google AdSense and Facebook Ad Networks do for their advertisers, Talroo uncovers the right candidates that companies are looking to hire.

Talroo leverages a search-and-match algorithm powered by state-of-the-art AI technologies. Our deep-learning processes analyze billions of signals daily, assessing the job seeker-employer relationship in real time. This produces significantly better search results for the job seekers, and higher quality applicant matches for the employer.
While we focus on providing amazing results and service for our customers, within our exciting company you’ll also find a high-performance environment of collaboration, encouragement, transparency and fun!

The Role and Impact

At Talroo, junior engineers take on responsibilities that are typically reserved for senior roles elsewhere. From day one, you’ll:
Own and deploy production features that directly impact revenue
Design and run A/B tests that influence major business decisions
Collaborate across the entire technical stack
Make data-driven decisions that affect millions of job seekers

Career Growth

We believe in rapid technical growth through hands-on experience. New engineers quickly progress from contributing to core systems to owning critical infrastructure components. You’ll have opportunities to grow as either a technical leader or engineering manager, expanding your expertise across our full technology stack: from frontend applications to distributed computing, machine learning systems, and high-performance infrastructure.

What Makes You a Great Match

You have, or are on track to receive, a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from a top undergrad program
You’re energized by diving deep into complex technical challenges
You have a builder's mindset and take pride in crafting robust, scalable solutions
You’re comfortable learning and adapting to new technologies as needed
You believe in writing code that stands up to rigorous peer review
Must be proficient in written and oral English communication skills
Must be willing to complete a technical online assessment as part of the selection process

Engineering Culture

Engineering-led company where the founder still writes code
Meritocratic environment where technical excellence is recognized and rewarded
Direct access to leadership and rapid implementation of good ideas
High standards for code quality, system design, and technical documentation

Tech stack used:

JavaScript, Next.js, React, Python, PHP, Java, Scala, RESTful APIs, SQL, Spark, Delta Lake, Docker, AWS

Highly competitive salary:

Highly competitive salary: $175,000 annually
100% employer-paid health, vision, and dental insurance premiums for employee and all dependents
Company-paid gym membership or ClassPass
100% paid parental leave
Responsibly Managed Unlimited PTO
Relocation reimbursement available
401(k) with immediate vesting and 3% employer contribution
Company DoorDash and Lunchdrop account
Employment sponsorship is available for this position

Location

Full-time, in-office position in Austin, TX.

Selection Process

Candidates must successfully complete a technical online assessment prior to interviews with our team. Our thorough interview process focuses on problem-solving ability and engineering fundamentals rather than specific technology expertise. We’re selective because we believe in maintaining a high-calibrated engineering team that pushes each other to excel.
For those candidates who are invited for a final round of interviews, please note that the final round will be on-site (not virtual) at our Austin, TX headquarters building. It will consist of multiple technical interviews with senior members of our Engineering management team. We will pay for flight, lodging, transport, and meal accommodations.

Talroo is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. Candidates will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or protected veteran status, and will not be discriminated against on the basis of disability.
