What is an associate software engineer?

An associate software engineer works with a team of engineering professionals and developers to improve existing software or design new applications. As an associate software engineer, your job duties include coding software, coordinating with hardware engineers to ensure that different types of technology can run the software, and helping the QA team to test software before release. Typical qualifications for the career include a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field and relevant technical experience with software applications. You also need excellent communication, coding, and analytical problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a team.

What are some common challenges faced by associate software engineers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world development teams?

Associate Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to larger, more complex codebases and learning to work within established development workflows. Unlike academic projects, real-world development involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, adhering to coding standards, and following agile processes. Additionally, balancing learning new technologies with delivering features on tight deadlines can be demanding. However, support from mentors and structured onboarding programs usually helps smooth this transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, as well as experience using version control systems like Git, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable software solutions, collaborating within development teams, and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies.

Job description

About the Role

As Software Engineer I, you'll join a collaborative team that spans onshore and offshore engineers, working across the full stack of our web application. You'll write production code, fix bugs, write tests, and ship features under the guidance of senior engineers, with room to grow quickly as you build real-world experience. This role is ideal for a recent graduate who is curious, coachable, and eager to learn modern engineering practices in a supportive environment.

What You'll Do
  • Build and maintain features across our .NET Core backend and React frontend under the guidance of senior engineers
  • Write clean, well-tested code and participate actively in code reviews — both giving and receiving feedback
  • Collaborate with QA, product managers, and both onshore and offshore teammates in a bi-weekly sprint cadence
  • Troubleshoot and resolve bugs, working from reported issues through to root cause and fix
  • Write and maintain unit and integration tests to support our automated testing efforts
  • Participate in sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives, and contribute to our software development lifecycle
  • Document your work clearly for teammates and for future maintainers
  • Continuously learn our codebase, tooling, and the vendor/workforce management domain
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 0–2 years of professional software development experience (internships and academic projects count)
  • Exposure to an object-oriented language (C#, Java, or similar) and willingness to grow deep expertise in .NET Core
  • Some familiarity with JavaScript/TypeScript and a frontend framework (React preferred, but not required)
  • Basic understanding of relational databases and SQL
  • Familiarity with Git or another version control system
  • Strong problem-solving instincts and a habit of asking good questions
  • Clear written and verbal communication, especially in a team that spans time zones
  • A growth mindset — you take feedback well and enjoy learning from teammates
Nice to Have
  • Coursework or project experience with .NET / C# and React specifically
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum ceremonies (even in an academic or internship setting)
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) or containerization (Docker)
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks (e.g., Playwright, xUnit, Jest)
  • Prior use of AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code)
What We Offer
  • Structured mentorship from senior and principal engineers
  • Hands-on experience with a real production SaaS platform used by enterprise customers
  • A modern, actively evolving tech stack and engineering culture
  • Hybrid work flexibility based in Raleigh, NC
  • Competitive salary, benefits, and paid time off
  • A small, collaborative team where your contributions are visible and valued
