What are some common challenges faced by associate software engineers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world development teams?

Associate Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to larger, more complex codebases and learning to work within established development workflows. Unlike academic projects, real-world development involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, adhering to coding standards, and following agile processes. Additionally, balancing learning new technologies with delivering features on tight deadlines can be demanding. However, support from mentors and structured onboarding programs usually helps smooth this transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, as well as experience using version control systems like Git, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable software solutions, collaborating within development teams, and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies.

Is 25 too late to become a software engineer?

The associate software engineer role is open to individuals of various ages, and starting a career at 25 is common. Many successful software engineers begin in their mid-20s or later, often after gaining skills through coding bootcamps, online courses, or degree programs. Age is generally not a barrier if you develop relevant skills and gain practical experience.

What is an associate software engineer?

An associate software engineer works with a team of engineering professionals and developers to improve existing software or design new applications. As an associate software engineer, your job duties include coding software, coordinating with hardware engineers to ensure that different types of technology can run the software, and helping the QA team to test software before release. Typical qualifications for the career include a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field and relevant technical experience with software applications. You also need excellent communication, coding, and analytical problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a team.

Job description

Company Overview:
Chevy Chase Trust is a privately owned investment think tank offering independent and highly personalized financial advice and planning for individuals, families, and institutions. Located just outside of Washington D.C., the firm specializes in unique thematic investment research and asset management. Chevy Chase Trust offers clients direct access to decision-makers and is built to put clients and client success over everything else. From thematic investment management to estate and financial planning, we show our commitment to inventive thinking and client service.

Our global, macroeconomic outlook means we do much more than observe and follow trends. Instead, we seek out ideas. It takes more than one kind of person to contribute to this culture. It takes all kinds of people thinking in unconventional ways—with a singular focus.

Job Purpose/Summary:

Beyond the technical checklist, looking for someone who writes production quality code as a habit, code a teammate can pick up, debug, and extend without archaeology. Our CRM is custom built rather than an off-the-shelf platform, this role requires real software engineering skill, not just configuration experience. The ability to read, extend, and refactor an existing codebase matters as much as writing new features. Strong communication with non-technical stakeholders and a track record of taking ownership of problems through to resolution matter as much as the technical skill set.

Summary of Competitive Benefits & Perks:
  • Health/Medical Insurance including Dental and Vision
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off
  • Bonus/Target Incentive
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Complimentary usage of modern in-house fitness center
  • On-premise full-service dining center discounts
  • Discounts via the company’s EAP
  • Monthly Employee Recognition Programs
  • Referral bonus
  • Pre-tax transportation options
  • Plus more!
Company Core Values:
  • Excellence: Demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and achieving the highest possible standards for performance.
  • Results: Consistently going above and beyond to deliver exceptional results and value for the team and the organization.
  • Ethics/Integrity: Demonstrates a commitment to integrity, peer respect, and fairness. Continuously demonstrates a strong work ethic by exhibiting an indisputable drive to get the job done.
  • Teamwork: Demonstrates a commitment to collaboration, mutual respect, and shared responsibility in achieving common goals.
Essential Job Functions of the Associate, Software Engineer:
  • Design, build, and maintain applications using C# and ASP.NET Core, primarily WPF and MVC
  • Work within and extend our proprietary, in-house CRM system
  • Write and optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, and database schemas and integrate with code using Entity Framework Core
  • Build custom reports for internal and business stakeholder use
  • Write clean, well-structured, maintainable code with appropriate testing and participate in code reviews
  • Diagnose and resolve production issues with proper error handling and logging
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions
Required Education / Experience of the Associate, Software Engineer:
  • High School Diploma
  • 3+ years of professional software development experience
  • Strong proficiency in C# and ASP.NET Core, particularly MVC and WPF; including proficiency in HTML, JavaScript and CSS
  • Experience with Entity Framework Core and SQL, including schema design and query optimization
  • Experience developing and maintaining custom business applications where software design and coding were primary responsibilities. Experience limited to administration, configuration, or low-code customization of third-party platforms is not sufficient
  • Comfort learning and working within a large, established internal codebase without extensive onboarding documentation
  • Experience working with source control systems such as Azure DevOps, Git, or TFS
Additional Job Qualifications of the Associate, Software Engineer:
  • Experience in financial services, trading, or wealth management preferred
  • Experience building custom reporting solutions preferred
  • Experience leading small technical initiatives preferred
  • Some experience utilizing AI coding tools and/or AI agent development preferred
Core Job Competencies of the Associate, Software Engineer:
  • Planning and organizing – Setting priorities and defining actions, time, and resources needed to achieve predefined goals
  • Teamwork – Working as a productive member of a cohesive group toward a common goal and contributing to team development and effective team dynamics.
  • Adaptability – Maintaining effectiveness in reaching set goals by adapting to changed circumstances, tasks, responsibilities, and people
  • Technical Expertise and Usage – Acquiring and applying technical and functional knowledge in a technological area of specialty
The actual base pay offered is determined by several variables, including, as appropriate, the applicant's qualifications for the position, years of relevant experience, distinctive skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held.  Base pay is one component of Chevy Chase Trust's total compensation package, which also includes access to or eligibility for healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, bonus plans and more.

Chevy Chase Trust is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace. We foster an environment that recognizes employees’ unique skillsets and ensure that all employees have an equal opportunity to grow and advance.

If you are a candidate in need of assistance or an accommodation in the application process, please contact corporate.resumes@bfsaul.com or 301-986-6000.
