What is an associate software engineer?

An associate software engineer works with a team of engineering professionals and developers to improve existing software or design new applications. As an associate software engineer, your job duties include coding software, coordinating with hardware engineers to ensure that different types of technology can run the software, and helping the QA team to test software before release. Typical qualifications for the career include a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field and relevant technical experience with software applications. You also need excellent communication, coding, and analytical problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a team.

What are some common challenges faced by associate software engineers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world development teams?

Associate Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to larger, more complex codebases and learning to work within established development workflows. Unlike academic projects, real-world development involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, adhering to coding standards, and following agile processes. Additionally, balancing learning new technologies with delivering features on tight deadlines can be demanding. However, support from mentors and structured onboarding programs usually helps smooth this transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, as well as experience using version control systems like Git, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable software solutions, collaborating within development teams, and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies.

Software Engineer

Regular Full-Time Atlanta, IN, US

The Software Engineer builds, maintains, and supports custom software used by employees, customers, and business partners. This is a full‑stack role covering the complete development lifecycle — discovery, planning, design, implementation, testing, release, and production support — across frontend applications, APIs, backend services, databases, and integrations.

AI‑assisted engineering is a normal part of how we work. Engineers use AI tools throughout planning, implementation, debugging, testing, review, and documentation, and remain fully accountable for the quality, security, and impact of everything they ship.

This role has a flexible work arrangement, meaning we are open to employees working remotely or in‑office. Periodic travel to the Atlanta, IN office is expected.

As a member of the Beck’s Family of employees, all full‑time employees are eligible for a generous benefits package:

  • Health benefits including two medical plan options and company HSA contributions, dental, vision, employer paid life/AD&D for you and your dependents, disability insurance, and access to an onsite Nurse Practitioner
  • 401k plan match & company sponsored pension plan and access to a Financial Advisor to help you manage your retirement savings
  • Paid time off, Paid Holidays, Wellness Programs, & Corporate Discounts
  • Company Christmas Party, Free Lunch, Two Hundred Dollar Merchandise Allowance, & Much More
Responsibilities
  • Deliver features end to end, spanning frontend, API, backend services, and database layers — often as coordinated changes across multiple codebases.
  • Plan before coding: define expected behavior, affected systems, test needs, and regression risk.
  • Build frontend workflows, forms, and shared components that are reliable, responsive, and true to approved designs, including mobile and progressive web app experiences.
  • Develop and maintain APIs, backend services, background jobs, and database‑backed workflows, including schema changes, stored procedures, and performance‑conscious SQL.
  • Contribute to integrations with internal systems and third‑party services.
  • Diagnose and fix defects at any layer — UI behavior, API responses, service logic, data, background processing — and participate in production support, staged releases, and hotfixes.
  • Write automated tests that cover expected behavior, edge cases, and regression risk.
  • Review teammates’ pull requests regularly and give clear, practical feedback — code review is a core responsibility, not a side task.
  • Help keep our platforms healthy through dependency upgrades, refactoring, tooling improvements, and test coverage growth.
  • Communicate clearly with engineers, QA, Design, Technology Business Partners, and business stakeholders, and document what others will need later.
Job Requirements

Education and Skills:

  • 2–5 years of professional experience building and supporting production software, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience building or maintaining APIs, backend services, and data‑driven applications.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and relational database design.
  • Fluency with Git workflows, pull requests, code review, automated testing, and agile delivery.
  • Ability to debug problems that cross application layers — UI, API, service logic, database, or background processing.
  • Good judgment when balancing delivery speed, maintainability, user experience, and production stability.
  • AI fluency: effective, responsible use of AI‑assisted development tools, with validation of everything they produce.
  • Clear communication with technical and non‑technical partners, and a practical interest in solving real business problems with software.
  • B.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field preferred, or equivalent practical experience.
Technologies

Not every item is required — breadth and willingness to learn matter more than checking every box.

  • React, Angular, Next.js, and modern frontend tooling
  • SQL Server (schema design, stored procedures), MongoDB, and Redis
  • Background job queues, scheduled jobs, and asynchronous processing
  • Mapping and geospatial data libraries
  • Authentication and authorization, feature flags, and headless CMS integrations
  • Report generation and PDF/document rendering
  • CI/CD pipelines, containerized deployments, and logging/monitoring tools
  • GitHub, Jira, and AI‑assisted development tools
Experience
  • Delivering user‑facing features end to end — frontend through API to database — in systems with active users.
  • Supporting production systems: monitoring, triage, hotfixes, and staged release processes.
  • Working with background jobs, queues, and long‑running or asynchronous business workflows.
  • Modernizing existing systems — framework and dependency upgrades, refactoring, type‑safety and test‑coverage improvements — without disrupting current users.
  • Maintaining backwards‑compatible API contracts for multiple clients, including web and mobile applications.
  • Moving comfortably between codebases, products, and stacks as team priorities shift.

In an effort to provide a safer, drug‑free workplace for employees, all full‑time applicants to whom offers of employment are made must submit to a drug test and background check, subject to applicable local, state, or federal laws or regulations. Employment at Beck's is contingent upon passing these pre‑employment screenings.
