Job description

Company Overview

Upchurch is a rapidly growing, full-service building engineering company providing mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical services across the southeastern United States. Founded in 1970 and headquartered in Horn Lake, MS, Upchurch has grown through both organic expansion and strategic acquisitions, establishing a strong reputation for quality, reliability, and service excellence. We offer end-to-end solutions—from design and installation to ongoing maintenance and emergency support—helping clients maximize building performance, energy efficiency, and equipment lifespan.

Position Summary

The Digital Construction Shop Detailer is responsible for developing accurate fabrication models, spool drawings, and shop deliverables that support off-site prefabrication and field installation. This role works closely with Project Managers, Engineers, BIM/VDC teams, and fabrication personnel to ensure constructible, coordinated, and fabrication-ready models for mechanical, plumbing, and sheet metal systems. The Digital Construction Shop Detailer plays a key role in improving fabrication efficiency, reducing field conflicts, and supporting successful project execution through the use of advanced BIM and Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) technologies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create detailed fabrication models, spool drawings, and shop drawings for mechanical, plumbing, and sheet metal systems.

  • Develop fabrication packages, spool sheets, Bills of Material (BOMs), and project deliverables to support shop production and field installation.

  • Participate in 3D model coordination and clash detection to improve constructability and reduce field conflicts.

  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Engineers, BIM/VDC personnel, and fabrication teams to ensure fabrication models accurately reflect project requirements.

  • Review construction drawings, specifications, dimensions, material requirements, connection details, and installation requirements to ensure fabrication accuracy.

  • Maintain and update fabrication models and drawings to reflect design revisions, RFIs, submittal changes, and field conditions.

  • Utilize BIM/VDC technologies to improve fabrication coordination, increase productivity, and reduce waste and rework.

  • Support prefabrication initiatives by identifying opportunities to improve workflow, standardization, and installation efficiency.

  • Perform quality control reviews of fabrication models and drawings to ensure compliance with project specifications, company standards, and applicable codes.

  • Assist with generating productivity reports, fabrication logs, and project tracking documentation.

  • Assist in producing project deliverables from Autodesk Revit, including fabrication drawings, spool sheets, schedules, reports, and Bills of Material.

  • Assist in developing small project drawings from field sketches using AutoCAD.

  • Assist with generating and uploading Trimble layout points to support field layout operations.

  • Audit fabrication models posted to fabrication platform software to verify accuracy, completeness, and readiness for production.

  • Verify Stratus model publishing and ensure fabrication information is current and accurately synchronized.

  • Collaborate with fabrication shop personnel to resolve detailing issues and improve constructability throughout the fabrication process.

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance digital workflows, fabrication standards, and project delivery.

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support digital construction and fabrication operations.

Qualifications
  • Associate degree or technical certification in Drafting, Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, Architecture, or a related field preferred; equivalent work experience will be considered.

  • Experience with commercial mechanical, plumbing, sheet metal, or industrial construction detailing preferred.

  • Working knowledge of BIM/VDC workflows and fabrication processes.

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and engineering documents.

  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multiple departments.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, accurate fabrication deliverables.

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, and Word).

  • Experience with Stratus fabrication software preferred.

  • Familiarity with Trimble layout systems and point generation preferred.

  • Knowledge of fabrication workflows, Bills of Material (BOMs), spool drawings, and fabrication documentation.

  • Experience with fabrication management software and digital construction platforms is preferred.

  • Ability to quickly learn company-specific BIM/VDC, fabrication, and project management software.

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to work in both an office and fabrication shop environment.

  • Occasionally visit fabrication facilities and active construction sites while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Ability to remain seated for extended periods while working on computer-based design and modeling tasks.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.

Benefits:

  • Competitive pay based on experience.

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.

  • Paid time off and holiday pay.

  • Opportunities for professional development and certification assistance.
