What engineers make $500,000?

Senior software engineers, especially those in high-demand fields like machine learning, cloud computing, or with extensive experience at major tech companies, can earn $500,000 or more annually. Compensation often includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options, and requires advanced skills, certifications, and a strong track record of performance.

What is the SDET engineer's salary?

The salary for an Associate Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) typically ranges from $70,000 to $110,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. SDETs with strong programming skills and knowledge of automation tools like Selenium or JUnit tend to earn higher salaries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Software Development Engineer In Test, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Software Development Engineer In Test, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), software testing principles, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing frameworks (like Selenium or JUnit), version control systems (such as Git), and CI/CD tools is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with development teams and identify issues efficiently. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring software quality, reducing defects, and supporting the agile development process.

Will QA or SDET get replaced by AI?

QA and SDET roles involve designing, developing, and maintaining automated testing frameworks, which require critical thinking and understanding of complex systems. While AI can assist with test automation and generate test cases, human oversight remains essential for interpreting results, handling exceptions, and ensuring software quality. Therefore, these roles are likely to evolve rather than be fully replaced by AI.

What is an Associate Software Development Engineer in Test?

An Associate Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) is an entry-level professional who designs, develops, and maintains automated tests to ensure the quality and functionality of software applications. They work closely with software developers and quality assurance teams to identify bugs, create test scripts, and automate testing processes. Their primary focus is on improving software reliability and streamlining the testing workflow by using programming skills to build robust test frameworks. This role often serves as a stepping stone to more advanced positions in quality engineering or software development.

What are some typical challenges faced by an Associate Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) when collaborating with development teams?

As an Associate SDET, one common challenge is ensuring clear communication between QA and development teams, especially when clarifying requirements or reporting bugs. SDETs often need to advocate for quality while balancing release deadlines, which requires effective collaboration and negotiation skills. Additionally, integrating automated tests into fast-paced development cycles can be complex, especially when dealing with evolving codebases or shifting priorities. Overcoming these challenges involves proactive communication, continuous learning, and adaptability within agile team structures.

Is SDET more technical than QA?

An SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test) role is typically more technical than a traditional QA role, as it involves designing and developing automated tests, writing code, and working closely with developers. QA roles often focus on manual testing, test case creation, and ensuring product quality through different testing methods. The SDET's technical skills in programming, automation tools, and software development are generally more advanced than those required for standard QA positions.

  • Development of innovative DFT IP in collaboration with cross-functional teams inside and outside the company

  • Work closely with component engineers to resolve high DPPM ASIC issues at EMS partner sites

  • Engage in test standard working groups, such as IEEE 1149, 1687, P1838, JC-42 Solid State Memories

  • Trusted advisor on ASIC testability to Juniper teams including ASIC frontend, physical design, DFT, system software, diagnostics, hardware and manufacturing test teams. The influence occurs from the beginning (ASIC kick-off) to production release.

  • Key advocate recognizing and solving structural vs functional test coverage gaps, as well as weaving in new fault models for advanced semiconductor technology nodes

  • Demonstrated innovation via patents, published technical papers and conference presentations

  • Ownership of ASIC test requirements for ASIC MRDs, phase exit validation, advanced test mode development, fault coverage attainment, achievement of manufacturability objectives and continuous improvement

  • Voice of test authority with ASIC suppliers -- working closely with their product/test teams, quality, design engineering and technologists to correlate and eradicate ASIC failures in our systems with their wafer test, package test and BLCT-1. Able to independently solve NTF (No-Trouble-Found) supplier issues, via creating unique ATE-level tests to solve such issues, per strong knowledge of a chip's design.

  • Responsible for influencing supplier testing to implement Juniper-favorable manufacturability modes at their production test

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 15+ years of experience in testability and DFT area for ASICs, memories, and 2.5D SiPs

  • Excellent knowledge of state-of-the-art DFT techniques in MBIST, IOBIST, LBIST, JTAG, scan/ATPG, and 1687

  • Strong working level experiences on ASIC DFT implementation, post-silicon validation, debug, and diagnostic integration

  • Exposure to various semiconductor test challenges and solutions for high-performance ASICs, TSV, HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) DRAM, 2.5D, and 3D ICs

  • Broad experiences with ASIC suppliers, IP/EDA vendors, 2.5D SiP ecosystems partners, and contract manufacturers

  • Excellent communication, collaboration and program management skill set. Able to independently influence others.
