Position Summary:

The Associate Vice President of Software Engineering is responsible for leading multiple talented engineering teams in building and delivering high-quality, innovative healthcare IT solutions. This position works closely with the CTO, other technology leaders, and Product Management to build software that supports our business objectives. This role requires a strong technical leader with a deep understanding of software development methodologies, a passion for building scalable and reliable systems, and a proven ability to manage and inspire large engineering teams. This position will be a champion of our core values, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement within the Product Development department. This position is an in-person role if local to South Bend, IN.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead multiple software engineering and quality teams, including hiring, coaching, performance management, career development, and accountability for results.
  • Partner with the CTO, Product Management, and senior leaders to execute technology strategy, modernization initiatives, roadmap commitments, budgeting, and vendor management.
  • Translate business and product priorities into actionable engineering plans with clear milestones, KPIs, SLAs, metrics, and delivery expectations.
  • Drive predictable execution across projects, sprints, releases, and production support while improving deployment frequency, lead time, quality, velocity, and customer outcomes.
  • Establish and enforce engineering standards, coding practices, code reviews, agile methods, CI/CD, containerization, automated testing, monitoring, logging, and alerting.
  • Champion the responsible adoption of AI-assisted development tools to accelerate software delivery while maintaining strong safeguards for security, privacy, intellectual property, code quality, testing, and human oversight.
  • Define and measure software development metrics and KPI’s and utilize the data for continuous improvement of the teams’ predictability, velocity and quality.
  • Oversee interoperability standards including APIs, FHIR, and HL7.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, SOC 2, HITRUST, cybersecurity best practices, secure development processes, vulnerability remediation, incident response, change management, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Evaluate technology options and architectural trade-offs, mentor technical leaders, and support teams through architecture reviews, complex problem solving, and continuous improvement.
  • Build strong partnerships with internal stakeholders and external vendors, communicating technical concepts clearly and aligning engineering work with business objectives.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, ownership, transparency, collaboration, continuous improvement, and value delivery across Software Engineering.
  • Participate in committees, focus groups, strategic planning, and other job-related assignments or special projects as directed.

  • Extensive experience building distributed systems using Java or C#, modern web frameworks such as React or Angular, and relational databases such as PostgreSQL or Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Ability to read and understand code and evaluate architecture, scalability, performance, reliability, and maintainability trade-offs.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS, and highly available software architectures.
  • Working knowledge of modern engineering practices and tools, including Agile, CI/CD, automated testing, GitHub Actions, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, and automation frameworks.
  • Deep understanding of software development methodologies (Agile, Scrum, Kanban) and tools to plan, measure and report (Jira preferred). Deep experience with establishing and capturing software development metrics to measure team performance and set improvement goals.
  • Healthcare technology experience is a strong plus, especially familiarity with EHR/EMR integrations, interoperability standards such as FHIR and HL7, and compliance frameworks including HIPAA, SOC 2, and HITRUST.
  • Experience applying AI-assisted software development tools in ways that improve efficiency and quality while protecting security, privacy, intellectual property, and code integrity.
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, or related field; equivalent experience will be considered.
  • 12+ years of hands‑on software engineering experience with growing responsibility and complexity of role and deliverables over time.
  • 5+ years of experience leading and developing software engineering teams at the Director level or above. Managing managers and growing leaders.
