Job description

About the Role
As a Staff Software Engineer, you are a senior individual contributor who provides technical leadership through influence-shaping architecture and engineering standards across multiple product areas while remaining hands-on. You will partner closely with Product, Design, Engineering, and business stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable, and maintainable systems across a mixed modern and traditional technology stack.
Our portfolio includes React/Next.js (TypeScript) front ends; Python/Django and Node.js backend services; Optimizely DXP / Graph CMS integrations; Azure as our primary cloud platform; and operational tooling across GitHub, Azure DevOps, observability platforms, and email delivery solutions (e.g., SendGrid).
Why Work at K. Hovnanian
At K. Hovnanian, you'll be part of a company with a long-standing reputation for quality, stability, and integrity-while also helping to modernize and evolve the technology that supports how people buy and experience their homes.
Make Your Work Matter
Our digital platforms directly support real customers making one of the most important decisions of their lives-where and how they live. The systems you design and improve will shape customer experiences, internal operations, and long-term business outcomes.
Influence at Scale
This role is designed for senior engineers who want meaningful influence without moving into people management. You'll help define technical direction, guide architectural decisions, and raise engineering standards across teams and systems-your work will be visible and long-lasting.
Meaningful Technical Challenges
You'll work across a diverse ecosystem that blends modern web technologies with critical legacy platforms. The challenge isn't just building new features-it's thoughtfully modernizing, integrating, and improving reliability while minimizing business disruption.
Stability with Forward Momentum
K. Hovnanian offers the stability of a well-established organization alongside continued investment in modernization and improvement. You'll have the opportunity to improve platforms, processes, and tooling in a thoughtful, sustainable way-without the short-term chaos of constantly shifting priorities.
Collaborative, Respectful Culture
Engineering works in close partnership with Product, Design, Marketing, and Operations. Clear communication, documentation, and collaboration are valued. Senior engineers are expected to mentor others, share knowledge, and lead through influence rather than authority.
Room to Grow
Whether you're deepening technical expertise, expanding architectural influence, or mentoring engineers across levels, this role offers ongoing professional growth in an environment that values long-term thinking and continuous improvement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential duties may vary by team. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
• Set technical direction for complex initiatives spanning multiple teams or product areas; drive alignment through design documentation (ADRs/RFCs), architecture reviews, and pragmatic standards.
• Lead end-to-end technical delivery for high-impact work, including solution design, sequencing, risk management, and cross-functional partnership.
• Evaluate and document legacy systems and processes; plan upgrades, replacements, or sunsetting with minimal business impact.
• Design, build, and evolve platforms across the stack:
o React/Next.js (TypeScript) applications
o Backend services (Python/Django and Node.js)
o Content delivery via Optimizely DXP / Graph CMS
• Own and improve critical integrations and workflows, including CMS publishing and preview, REST/GraphQL APIs, and outbound communications (HTML email templates, email/SMS providers).
• Partner with cloud and platform teams to improve hosting, runtime decisions, and delivery pipelines across Azure and Vercel.
• Drive reliability and operational excellence by improving observability, reducing recurring incidents, and contributing to runbooks and on-call readiness.
• Mentor engineers across levels; raise the bar through code reviews, pairing, and technical coaching.
• Uphold secure engineering practices, internal controls, testing strategy, and performance standards.
• Thoughtfully explore and apply AI-assisted development and automation while validating outputs and protecting customer and company data.
Qualifications
To perform this role successfully, an Associate must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated ownership of large systems and cross-team technical leadership.
• Strong fundamentals in system design, API design, data modeling, and software engineering best practices.
• Advanced proficiency in modern web engineering (React, Next.js, TypeScript).
• Hands-on backend experience with Python/Django or Node.js and working knowledge of SQL databases.
• Experience integrating CMS platforms (Optimizely preferred) and managing content delivery workflows.
• Experience with cloud hosting and delivery (Azure preferred); familiarity with platforms such as Vercel.
• Proficiency with GitHub workflows and CI/CD (GitHub Actions and/or Azure DevOps).
• Experience with observability tooling (Application Insights, Azure Monitor, Datadog, or similar).
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to influence without authority.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Additional Information
• Azure, security, or cloud architecture certifications are a plus.
• Work environment noise level is typically moderate.
