Data Engineering - Associate Director Software Engineering


Hybrid New York-Based Role (currently 2 days per week in office)


Overview

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Associate Director Software Engineering to lead a dynamic engineering team. In this role, you will serve as a player-coach, balancing team leadership and mentorship with hands-on technical contributions. You will oversee the full software development lifecycle, build scalable data solutions and backend services, and collaborate closely with cross-functional Agile teams.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Mentorship

  • Lead, guide, and mentor a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous learning.

  • Support the growth and development of team members through coaching, feedback, and technical leadership.

Hands-On Development

  • Partner with the engineering team to design, develop, and maintain enterprise-scale applications, data solutions, and backend services.

  • Contribute to architecture decisions and technical implementations.

Architecture & Integration

  • Drive the design and implementation of scalable application and data integration solutions.

  • Support the development of service-oriented and distributed application architectures.

Agile Delivery

  • Manage projects throughout the full development lifecycle within an Agile environment.

  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional stakeholders and geographically distributed teams.

Quality & Deployment

  • Promote engineering best practices, including automated testing, performance optimization, code quality, and continuous delivery processes.

  • Support modern software deployment and operational excellence initiatives.

Stakeholder Communication

Qualifications

Experience

  • 9+ years of experience building enterprise-scale software solutions.

  • 2+ years of experience leading software engineering teams preferred.

Technical Leadership

  • Proven ability and willingness to contribute hands-on while managing and mentoring engineers.

  • Experience leading the design and delivery of scalable applications and data solutions.

Software Engineering

  • Strong background in backend application development and data processing systems.

  • Experience building high-performance, scalable services and enterprise applications.

Data & Integration

  • Experience in data engineering, systems integration, or software development.

  • Familiarity with relational and non-relational database technologies.

Cloud & Data Platforms

  • Experience with cloud-based application development and modern data processing environments (GCP, AWS, Azure).

  • Knowledge of data integration, workflow automation, distributed computing, and scalable data platforms.

APIs & Distributed Systems

  • Experience designing and consuming APIs.

  • Familiarity with distributed systems, containerized applications, infrastructure automation, and modern application deployment practices.

DevOps & Quality Practices

  • Experience with source control systems, CI/CD processes, automated testing, and quality assurance frameworks.

  • Strong understanding of Test-Driven Development (TDD), debugging practices, and performance optimization.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Anticipated base salary range: $131,347 - $170,000, depending on location, experience, and qualifications.
