Job Description

Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC), located in Reno, NV is seeking applicants for an Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager. The EHS Manager is responsible for the leadership and management of the environmental, health, and safety program for all campuses/sites of TMCC. The EHS program includes the EH&S management system, environmental compliance, occupational health, injury, and incident mitigation and investigation. This includes hazardous material procurement, hazardous waste management and operations, industrial hygiene, asbestos, radiation safety, and fire and life safety. The position provides budget planning, projection, and strategic planning for the College's EHS functions. The EHS Manager serves on a variety of internal and external committees that promote environmental compliance and sustainability, the TMCC safety culture, and the health and wellness for all TMCC faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

Major Responsibilities(duties include but are not limited to):

EHS Management System:

Develop and administer the college wide EHS Management System to maintain environmental, health, and safety programs, permits and other obligations in an effort to sustain our social and legal license(s) to operate while building and promoting a positive culture of equity and inclusiveness. Includes occupational injury and disease reporting and investigation. The EHS Manager acts as the College Chemical Hygiene Officer.

Training and Exercises:

Implement and maintain a college wide training and exercise program to include all applicable NSHE and regulatory obligations, staff EHS related professional development, and continuous improvement training plan.

Organizational Resilience:

Implement and maintain a robust emergency preparedness, planning, response, and recovery program including supporting business continuity planning, risk management assessments and property loss management.

Professional Development and Department Budgeting:

Maintain professional certification and licenses, attend professional development and subject-matter conferences, participate in and/or chair safety- and other related committees, exercise fiscal responsibility with the EHS budget and expense management, and deploy EHS related continuous improvement projects.

Decisions and Judgements

The EHS Manager role is routinely faced with a variety of unique issues and concerns where new solutions that may have not been previously applied are needed. The role requires decision making can affect an individual, a department, or the College as a whole and must be made with sensitivity to each potential outcome. Most decisions at the EHS Manager level are based on regulatory or NSHE statute, policy, or procedure.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge, understanding of, and the ability to interpret and apply environmental and occupational health and safety regulations to a broad range of institutional areas

  • Ability to understand and apply internal NSHE and institutional policy and procedures

  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement policies and procedures to assure awareness of, and compliance with, safety, health, and environmental requirements to reduce risk

  • Ability to identify and mitigate hazards and risk effectively using a variety of methods and resources including accident and near miss investigation, regulatory and internal inspections, and stakeholder feedback

  • Ability to write concise and effective reports, procedures, and other regulatory based documents

  • Project management that will include contractors, vendors, and other stakeholders in the regulatory community

  • Ability to communicate effectively, lead discussions, and take an active lead role in EH&S related committees

  • Ability to work with sensitive and confidential information in relation to employee health, and other restricted information

The successful EHS Manager will have the ability and understanding that cultivating relationships and interacting effectively with Leadership, department heads, faculty, staff and other employees at all levels of responsibility is an important piece to building trust and maintaining effective communication. The EHS Manager will also maintain professional relationships with numerous outside contacts including representatives from the NSHE and the regulatory community.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of related professionalexperience; OR Associates degree and six (6) years of related professional experience.

  • Degree should be in Science or Engineering, including chemistry, biology, industrial hygiene, environmental management, occupational safety, and hazardous materials.

  • Professional experience should entail environmental management, hazardous materials management, industrial hygiene, safety system management or similar experience.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Master's Degree in Science, Engineering, or a related field that may include fields of chemistry, physical, biological, industrial hygiene, environmental, occupational safety, and hazardous materials.

2. Related experience in a higher education setting with multiple sites.

3. Related certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Environmental Manager (CEM), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO), and other related certifications and licensures

Salary and Benefits Information:

Salary: $78,777 - $98,471 Initial salary placement will be dependent on education level and years of experience.
