Job description
This Opportunity
Provides technical assistance for the collection, identification, compiling, and analysis of environmental and chemical data from samples of air, soil, water, and other material to determine the effects of toxic chemicals on organisms in their natural environments, as well as the ecosystems they belong to. Generates accurate and concise documentation, assessing the movement and outcome of contaminants, bioaccumulation, as well as long-term risks to ecological and human health. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.
Your Impact
- With minimal supervision, assist with collecting, extracting, identifying, and compiling chemical and environmental data from organisms and samples of air, soil, water, sludge, and other matrices for research, projects, investigations, and surveys pertaining to toxicology, industrial hygiene, human health risk assessment, and/or emergency response.
- Perform basic professional toxicologist work relating to air emission sources, greenhouse gas, hazardous or solid waste sites, water resources and supplies, facilities, pollution sources, and proposed and existing site conditions to determine primary, secondary, tertiary, and residual toxicological, chemical, ecological, and human health impact.
- Assist with the development of technologies, monitoring devices, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to reduce the volume and toxicity of pollutants, account for the negative environmental impact, and allow for greater reuse of post-consumer and post-industrial waste streams.
- Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
- Assist technical staff and project managers with toxicological and environmental risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis with low-level threat mitigation activities and remediation projects involving the adverse effects of chemical substances on living organisms and exposure to toxins and toxicants.
- Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements and analysis.
- Research environmental hazmat databases regarding historical property land uses.
- Write technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, spreadsheets, visualizations, and software.
- Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but is not limited to, the maintenance of sample collection, laboratory documentation, equipment, written procedures, monitoring systems, and logbooks.
- Complete training on assigned tasks.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Toxicology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or closely related discipline.
- 1 to 3 years of relevant experience working in toxicology, industrial hygiene, risk assessment, and or emergency response.
- Knowledge of toxicology principles, practices, process, and the application to project work-related issues.

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
- Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
