The Engineer - Powerplant (AOG) provides world-class customer service while keeping safety and compliance the top priorities. This individual contributor position is a primary powerplant engineer in support of any current / imminent aircraft on the ground or potential operational impact avoidance activities for Alaska Airlines (AS). 


Associate (P1) 

  • Contributes to the application and management of the Alaska ETOPS and APU on-demand programs.  
  • Contributes to the application and management of the Engine Condition Monitoring Program.  
  • Assists Maintenance and Technical Services teams with troubleshooting for resolution to systemic/chronic powerplant issues, minimizing aircraft downtime for unscheduled maintenance. 
  • Reviews all Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) recommendations - Service Bulletins (SBs), Service Letters (SLs), etc.- applicable to the fleet. 
  • Under direction of the Manager or Fleet Powerplant Engineer, authors engineering control (EC) documents (engineering orders and authorizations, fleet campaigns, etc.) to direct the incorporation of modifications, improvements, and disposition of line troubleshooting and shop requests. 
  • Learns to collaborate with the Fleet Powerplant Engineers and cross-divisional teams (e.g., records, planning, line maintenance, engine build-up shop, QC, flight operations, technical publications, etc.), ensuring efficient implementation of released EC documents. 
  • Seeks to understand all available information (e.g., AS operational data, OEM engineering data, other operators shared information, etc.) to continually improve the safe and efficient operation of the installed Powerplant(s). 
  • Develop AS-specific engineering data for inclusion into the ICAs (manuals) for configuration control and required maintenance actions with supervision. 
  • Contributes to the reliability program. Learns powerplant and fleet initiatives and works closely with powerplant fleet engineers to support reliability initiatives.  

Engineer (P2) 

  • Works independently within the team to manage the Alaska ETOPS and APU on-demand programs. 
  • Works Independently within the team to manage of the Engine Condition Monitoring Program. 
  • Takes the initiative to propose Maintenance and Technical Services teams with troubleshooting resolutions to systemic/chronic powerplant issues, minimizing aircraft downtime for unscheduled maintenance with limited supervision. 
  • Review and evaluate all applicable Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) guidance—including Service Bulletins (SBs), Service Letters (SLs), and related documentation—for fleet impact and compliance requirements. 
  • With limited direction from the Manager or Fleet Powerplant Engineer, authors Engineering Control (EC) documents (engineering orders and authorizations, fleet campaigns, etc.) to direct the incorporation of modifications, improvements, and disposition of line troubleshooting and shop requests with limited supervision. 
  • Partners with the Fleet Powerplant Engineers to lead the cross-divisional teams (e.g., records, planning, line maintenance, engine build-up shop, QC, flight operations, technical publications, etc.), ensuring efficient implementation of released EC documents. 
  • Utilizes all available information (e.g., AS operational data, OEM engineering data, other operators shared information, etc.) to continually improve the safe and efficient operation of the installed Powerplant(s).

  • Contributes to the reliability program. Learns powerplant and fleet initiatives and work closely with powerplant fleet engineers to support reliability initiatives. 

Senior Engineer (P3) 

  • Serve as a subject matter expert supporting Maintenance and Technical Services by providing troubleshooting solutions for systemic or chronic powerplant issues, minimizing unscheduled maintenance downtime with minimal supervision. 
  • Independently manage the Alaska ETOPS and APU ondemand programs, ensuring compliant, efficient, and uninterrupted execution. 
  • Contribute to the Engine Condition Monitoring (ECM) Program by exercising independent judgment, analyzing trends, and making technical recommendations to improve fleet performance and reliability. 
  • Leads analysis of all applicable Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) guidance—including Service Bulletins (SBs), Service Letters (SLs), and related documentation—for fleet impact and compliance requirements. 
  • Author Engineering Control (EC) documents—such as engineering orders, fleet campaigns, and authorizations—with minimal direction, supporting modifications, improvements, and the disposition of line and shop troubleshooting requests. 
  • Lead and collaborate with crossfunctional teams—including records, planning, line maintenance, engine buildup shop, quality control, flight operations, and technical publications—to ensure timely and effective implementation of released EC documents. 
  • Author Alaskaspecific engineering data for inclusion in Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICAs), maintaining configuration control and defining required maintenance actions with minimal supervision. 
  • Actively support fleet safety and reliability initiatives by leveraging operational data, OEM engineering resources, and industry best practices. 

Associate  

  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering, or an additional 2 years of experience in aircraft maintenance, technical training including an A&P license, and/or aviation management in lieu of this degree. 

Intermediate 

  • 2 years of Powerplant engineering experience, or related area (e.g., airline, OEM, and/or shop).  
  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering, or an additional 2 years of experience in aircraft maintenance, technical training including an A&P license, and/or aviation management in lieu of this degree. 

Senior Engineer

  • 4 years of Powerplant Engineering experience, or related area (e.g. airlines, OEM, and/or engine shop). 
  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering; or an additional 2 years of relevant experience in aircraft engine maintenance or technical training such as an A&P license or aviation management in lieu of this degree.  
  • Advanced knowledge of Powerplant Systems.  

Required at all levels 

  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, off hours and rotating shifts. 
  • Must be willing to infrequently travel to support AOG aircraft and technicians.  
  • Understanding of Gas Turbine fundamental operating principles (aero, thermal, mechanical, etc.). 
  • Knowledge of APUs and Powerplant Systems. 
  • Excellent communication (e.g., verbal, written, and listening), presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to produce clear and concise documentation. 
  • Detailed oriented and highly organized in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook). 
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.  
  • Minimum age of 18. 
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, relevant experience/level and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Hawaiian/Horizon employees. Alaska/Hawaiian/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.
