Job description

Van Cleef Engineering Associates, LLC (Van Cleef) is a dynamic, multi‐disciplined consulting civil engineering firm of Engineers, Certified Inspectors, Landscape Architects, Planners and Land Surveyors. With offices in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, we provide expertise in all of the major areas of civil engineering, municipal engineering, municipal planning, and land surveying.

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Project Engineer to join our team in Phillipsburg, NJ.

This role focuses on municipal infrastructure projects including roadway improvements, drainage systems, utilities, and public site work. As a Project Engineer, you will manage projects from design through completion, collaborate with municipal clients and internal teams, and ensure all work meets applicable standards and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design a variety of municipal infrastructure projects including roadway improvements, drainage systems, utilities, and public site work
  • Perform review of municipal ordinances, zoning regulations, stormwater requirements, and other applicable agency regulations for project applicability
  • Prepare or assist with preparation of the plans, grading plans, utility plans, road and utility profiles, and construction documents
  • Prepare municipal plan design packages, engineering reports, and regulatory submissions; manage smaller projects independently and support senior staff on larger efforts
  • Utilize AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and stormwater design software for design and analysis
  • Serve as day-to-day point of contact for municipal clients and project stakeholders
  • Coordinate with permitting agencies, utility companies, and local government entities throughout the project process
  • Meet regularly with project managers and team members to align on goals, schedules, and project updates
  • Perform site visits during design development and construction to support the design process and ensure quality
  • Support project managers in monitoring budgets, tracking costs, and managing scope, timelines, and change orders
  • Supervise and provide guidance to junior staff in carrying out project tasks
  • Generate periodic project status reports for clients and internal stakeholders
  • Ensure project management systems are maintained accurately and up to date

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering, or a related required
  • EIT or PE licensure a plus
  • Experience in civil engineering with a focus on municipal or public works projects preferred
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and stormwater design tools
  • Familiarity with municipal codes, permitting processes, and regulatory requirements
  • Strong communication, organizational, and client-facing skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously

Compensation:

Van Cleef Engineering Associates is committed to pay transparency and equitable compensation practices in compliance with applicable laws, including the New Jersey Equal Pay Act. The estimated salary range for this position will fall between $65,000 - $90,000. The starting salary offered is contingent upon a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience/skillset, educational qualifications, and professional certifications, as well as internal pay equity and geographic location.
