About the opportunity
SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Project Civil Engineer to join our growing team in Pittsburgh, PA. Specializing in energy project site civil design, erosion and sediment control plans, stormwater management design, and hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, our team is committed to delivering high-quality solutions to clients across the U.S. With projects spanning across the US, we offer a dynamic work environment and opportunities for professional growth.
We are seeking skilled Project Civil Engineers with expertise in civil site design, erosion and sediment control, stormwater management, and robust project management capabilities. The ideal candidate will have experience leading engineering projects, managing junior staff, and engaging in business development activities. Collaboration with multiple disciplines and stakeholders, including CAD designers, GIS analysts, environmental biologists, regulatory agencies, municipalities, and clients, is a key aspect of this role.
This is a full-time, salaried, regular (with benefits) position with flexibility for hybrid work arrangements. Highly qualified, remote (= distributed) locations in Philadelphia or Cincinnati will be seriously considered.
This job opening can hire at two different job levels:
  • Associate Project Civil Engineer - Typically with at least six years of relevant experience and expertise preferred, and a PE license required.
  • Project Civil Engineer - Typically with at least seven years of relevant experience and expertise preferred, and a PE license required.

What you will accomplish
  • Lead engineering design and development of construction drawings.
  • Oversee CAD design efforts and help to mentor other junior engineer staff on CAD design standards and methods
  • Manage project scope, budget, and schedule to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Support engineering needs across regional SWCA offices, providing technical expertise and guidance.
  • Coordinate with engineering teams to balance workloads and ensure project schedules and budgets are met.
  • Conduct technical reviews of project deliverables to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Assist with Quality Control and Quality Assurance processes.
  • Take responsibility for team safety, developing safety plans (when applicable), and anticipating potential safety hazards.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships through effective communication and project management.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities through client relationships, networking, and collaboration with other SWCA offices.

Experience and qualifications for success
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering or related engineering field.
  • At least four (4) years of experience in civil engineering for the Associate Project Civil Engineer (PII) and at least (5) years of experience for a Project Civil Engineer (PIII).
  • Professional Engineer License in Pennsylvania, or ability to obtain via reciprocity.

Preferred Qualification:
  • Seven (7) or more years of experience in civil/stormwater design.
  • Additional PE License in surrounding states.
  • Experience supporting proposal development, business development, and client management.

A Civil Engineer employee in this area or remote based position can expect an annual salary of:
  • Associate Project Civil Engineer - $82,347.00 - $105,716.00.
  • Project Civil Engineer - $93,475.00 - $120,182.00

Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
