Job description

The Process Analyzer FEED Engineer will provide consulting services in the following green & brown field project activities: analysis of measurement requirements and process composition / physical properties, analytical technology specification, guidance on analytical system integration solution, scope development / budgetary estimate, determine environmental reporting requirements, recommendation for system maintenance / operation improvements, preparation of equipment datasheets, preliminary design & BOM development, detailed design preparation & review. Candidate must be able to work independently and fill in gaps where customer or application information is missing.

Duties may include the following:

  • Site walk-down, existing sample point review, recommendation for new sample point / probe design, field bundle routing planning, collection of customer data (for equipment datasheet preparation), existing equipment review & troubleshooting, photos of existing installations, measurements of existing installations, redline drawings for existing equipment (capturing any changes not documented), detail available utilities for new or modified equipment, installation inspection / supervision.

  • Travel to/work in a plant setting as needed.

  • Have the mobility for extended site walk downs & ability to climb ladders as needed.

  • Comfortable with elevated heights.

  • Position location and travel may change. Typical customer site visits may be limited to 1-2 days with most days in office / remote. There is a possibility for the engineer to be stationed at a customer site for months continuously. Most travel is expected along Texas and Louisiana gulf coast. Extended travel distance and / or prolonged site assignments are not typical and would be reviewed with engineer before assignment.

The System Engineer will communicate project requirements to internal Valmet team members including: sales, quotations, engineering, design, project management, production, test, and supply chain. Engineer will provide support throughout the project life-cycle to Valmet project team and customer.

Responsibilities:

Engineer responsibilities for a typical project may include:

  • Determine the proper analytical technology and system integration solution as required for the application.
  • Provide recommendations in written report for analysis improvement, equipment replacement, maintenance reduction, etc.
  • Onsite support / scope development for new project.
  • Preparation of datasheets, analyzer list, and preliminary drawings as required.
  • Direct the project designer in the creation of detailed drawings for shelters or racks including the following drawing types: plan views, elevations, electrical power / signal / communication wiring diagrams, utility piping and tubing schematics, sample conditioning system flow schematics, detailed sample probe drawings, alarm system (relay or PLC) detailed wiring diagrams, fabrication, and demo drawings.
  • Specify the project Bill of Material.
  • Approve material requisitions for purchase of equipment.
  • Support craftsman during the production phase of the project.
  • Support technician during testing and customer FAT phases of the project.
  • Finalize design documentation to represent "as built" condition.

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics.

  • Associates technical degree and strong background in analytical technology / systems will be considered.

  • 10+ years successful experience in an analyzer project engineering role.

  • Communicate complex design requirements with key customers, the design team, and craftsmen.

  • Candidate to have working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Knowledge of software including: AutoCAD, Solid Edge / Solidworks, ChemCAD, Visual Basic is a plus

It is required for the candidate to have the following industry specific knowledge:

  • Direct the complete design for analyzer system integration projects including: plan views, elevations, electrical power / signal, utility piping / tubing, sample conditioning systems, sample probes, and alarm systems (PLCs or Relay Logic).
  • Ability to perform calculations: sample lag time, sample pressure drop, sample supply / return line sizing, sample dewpoint (using ChemCAD software), utility piping / tubing line sizing, tubing orifice sizing, valve / regulator Cv sizing, panelboard loading, transformer sizing, circuit breaker sizing, electrical conductor sizing.
  • Must be able to read and understand end user P&IDs. Candidate to provide recommendations / redlines as needed.
  • Working knowledge of codes / standards: NEC, IEC, API, NFPA, ISA
  • Firm grasp of hazardous area classifications: Class I Division 1, Class I Division 2, ATEX Zone 1, and ATEX Zone 2 electrical areas.
  • Experience with NEMA 7 electrical equipment for hazardous areas.
  • Knowledge of analyzers including: Gas Chromatographs, UV/IR Continuous Gas Analyzers, Paramagnetic Continuous Gas Analyzers, FTNIR, CEMS, pH & conductivity, TOC, Zirconium Oxide / Catalytic Bead stack analyzers.
  • Knowledge of analyzer applications: process, stack O2/Combustible, CEMS, HRVOC, Subpart Ja.
  • Working knowledge of signal communications protocol: Modbus, OPC, TCP/IP Ethernet.
  • Experience in reading / understanding petrochemical or refinery electrical, instrumentation, mechanical, structural specifications.
  • Experience in reviewing analytical system integration quotations against a set of customer specifications and analyzer data sheets.
  • Project experience in the field at a petrochemical or refinery site.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • 10+ years experience as a lead engineer for analytical system integration projects.

  • Registered P.E. in the State of Texas.
