The primary responsibility for the Pricing team is to accurately and systematically value each individual car that we buy and sell. Last year, CarMax sold over 1 million vehicles and appraised over 2 million vehicles, and Pricing directed over $20B in spend to purchase inventory. To properly value these vehicles, our data scientists and analysts must develop algorithms and processes that best reflect customer preferences for each vehicle’s unique characteristics and that effectively respond to constantly changing consumer demand, wholesale auction supply, and other global/local market conditions.

Our team tackles complex problems while striving to be a great representation of CarMax’s 4 core values:

Do the Right Thing: We prioritize maintaining the culture of integrity which has set CarMax apart in the used car industry, and promote a respectful and inclusive environment at work

About The Role

CarMax relies on algorithms to help provide our teams with actionable insights that guide decisions about which cars to buy, how to price them, and how to allocate inventory across our 200+ stores. Doing so ensures that we have the right cars at the right prices to meet our customers’ needs. As we continue to innovate our customer experience and focus on the buying and selling experience our customers want, we increasingly need to make these decisions quickly at scale. Our team of data scientists and analysts plays a critical role in unlocking the business value from these innovations.

As a Senior Manager of Pricing Analytics, you will work with data scientists and analysts on the Supply Chain Strategy team and with business partners/stakeholders to make key recommendations and drive improvements to ensure our pricing and buying decisions are optimized to support sales growth.

  • Partner with business leaders to drive execution by leveraging your team to identify KPIs, set measurable goals, and create management systems to deliver results

    • Ensure that the model is tuned to current market conditions by identifying times when immediate strategy changes are needed (ex: gas prices spiking)

    • Build and execute a management system to ensure that the model is delivering intended values (alert system, regular review meetings…)

    • Quickly respond to and resolve pricing system issues regardless of time of day/week

  • Lead data scientists on the team in leveraging models to drive tangible business value

  • Influence strategic direction of company by providing analytical evaluation and strategic thoughtfulness to key problems and by working to gain buy-in across entire organization

  • Present insights and recommendations to key stakeholders to achieve consensus for change
