Health Systems Management

Assistant/Associate - Appointment Stream (NTS)

The Department of Health Policy & Management, School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh is seeking a practice-focused faculty member, in a non-tenure stream appointment, at the rank of Assistant or Associateย Professor, with demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and leadership in academic programs. Candidates with practice experience and educational backgrounds in health administration, health services management, business administration, organizational studies or related fields are encouraged to apply.ย Health care industry experience in a payer, provider, not-for-profit, government, or consulting is strongly preferred.

Teaching emphasis will focus on management-related areas, including any of the following:

The successful candidate will be closely involved with teaching and mentoring in the Department's graduate programs including its Master of Health Administration (MHA), Master of Public Health (MPH), and MHA/MBA programs. The teaching and mentoring may also involve undergraduate students in the School of Public Health's Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) program. Areas of responsibility will include students' integrative experiences, professional development activities, curriculum development, accreditation, job placement, and alumni relations.

This position is a full time 12-month appointment and requires teaching four 3-credit courses annually.

Qualificationsย 

The successful candidate will be expected to teachย graduate courses in the Department and mentorย master's students. The role may include similar involvement with undergraduate students. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in service at the Department,ย School, or University level.ย 

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

ย ย  A combination of professional experience in the field of health care management in a payer, provider, not-for-profit, government, or consulting setting and academic experience as a course instructor.

ย ย  A track record or commitment to excellence in teaching at the graduate and/or undergraduate levels.

ย ย  A track record or potential for excellence in mentoring graduate or undergraduate students.

ย ย  A commitment to excellence in service.

ย ย  Experience or potential for excellence in managing and innovating in professional degree programs.

Position Requirements at the Assistant Professor level include:

ย ย  The ideal candidate will have a combination of industry and academic experience.

ย ย  Industry candidates with a a professional degree in management (e.g., MHA or MBA) should also have a minimum of 2 years of academic experience including full responsibility for at least one course.

ย ย  Academic candidates with a doctoral degree in health management, health services, health administration, health policy,ย business, or education should have prior teaching experience as well as prior professional health care management or health industry experience.

ย ย  All candidates should have demonstrated ability to teach, evaluate, and mentor students or the potential to do so.

Position requirements at the Associate Professor level include:

ย ย  The ideal candidate will have a combination of industry and academic experience.

ย ย  For individuals with a doctoral degree, at least 6 years of post-graduate experience in a combination of teaching and service in a health management program at the undergraduate or graduate level, as well as professional health care management experience in a payer, provider, not-for-profit, government, or consulting setting.

ย ย  For individuals with a professional degree in management (e.g., MHA or MBA), at least 6 years of post-graduate experience in relevant positions of increasing complexity in a combination of industry and educational settings, as well as demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring.

ย ย  Track record of participation in production of research, educational materials, or industry reports is preferred.

ย ย  Track record of contributions to health management education, including mentoring students, service on student committees, contributions to course design, and other leadership in an educational context.

ย ย  Service to relevant national and local professional organizations (e.g. ACHE, HFMA, MGMA, etc.).

The University of Pittsburgh Department of Health Policy and Management's Masters in Health Administration (MHA) is one of the oldest accredited programs in the US.ย  It currently ranks 12thย in the US News and World Report.ย  The Department is located in the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health, which is ranked seventh in terms of National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding.ย  A member of the Association of Schools of Public Health, theย School of Public Healthย (SPH)ย has nearlyย 600 students, 156 full-time faculty members and more than 500ย staff members,ย SPHย is located inย the heart of Pittsburgh's healthcare district andย in close proximity toย theย University of Pittsburgh's other five health sciences schools and theย main Pittsburghย campus.

Theย missionย of the Department of Health Policy and Managementย is to improve public health through better planning, design, management, and evaluation of the myriad organizations that provide health services. The core disciplines represented within the Department include health economics, health services research, human resource management, health policy, law, ethics, and organization studies applied to health care. Faculty are engaged in multidisciplinary research,ย and scholarship addressing a range of problems relevant to health policy, health services delivery, outcome measurement, patient safety, leadership, and organization management relevant to healthcare organizations andย systems.ย In addition to the accredited Master's in Health Administration and joint MHA/MBA program, the Department offers aย Master's of Public Health, aย Master's of Scienceย in Health Services Research and Policy, and a PhD in Health Services Research and Policy.ย The Department has funded research projects totaling moreย thanย $22 million.
