Job description

Job Description
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard -from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
The Role
We are seeking a Fluid Fill Systems Technical Specialist to join our General Assembly Manufacturing Engineering team (GAME).
In this role, you will be responsible for leading the design and standardization of all fluid fill equipment in General Assembly. This includes but is not limited to brake evacuation and fill, RESS fill, radiator fill, fuel fill, and air suspension fill.
As the global technical authority for General Assembly fluid-fill systems, you will guide the strategy, requirements, design, supplier execution and post-launch improvement of these systems across GMNA. You will translate product and plant needs into safe, quality-capable, cost-effective, and repeatable manufacturing solutions.
Joining our organization will provide you with the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies, contribute to innovation, and collaborate with a diverse team of experts.
You will play a key role in advancing our fluid fill and fluid fill automation capabilities and ensuring that our fluid fill systems are at the forefront of the industry.
Success in this role will be measured by the adoption of common standards, safe and capable equipment, launch performance, fill accuracy, throughput, uptime, quality, maintenance effectiveness, total cost, and demonstrated business benefits across the applicable plants and programs.
What You'll Do
  • Direct the design, development, and/or continuous improvement of manufacturing processes for all fluid fill systems in General Assembly.
  • Benchmark world-class processes and equipment, incorporate lessons learned, develop Bill of Equipment (BoE) and lead global expert team meetings.
  • Establish and maintain global fluid-fill strategies, standard work, equipment criteria, Manufacturing Requirements (MRs), and supporting documentation to drive reuse, scalability, and consistent execution across programs and plants.
  • Develop strategies to standardize fluid fill equipment across centers and to meet future product requirements.
  • Participate in feasibility studies and prototyping to explore new automation opportunities, technologies, and methodologies.
  • Lead technical and financial feasibility assessments and develop business-case recommendations for new, modified, or upgraded fluid-fill systems. Quantify capital investment, labor and MCPU impact, throughput, quality, safety, reliability, maintenance, utilities, floor-space, timing, risk, and expected payback or return.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to other teams and the GMNA Assembly Plants.
  • Travel to assembly plants when necessary to help solve production, throughput and maintenance issues, with up to 25% of overnight travel required (in GMNA - USA, Canada and Mexico).
  • Support travel to supplier and integrator locations as needed for technical reviews, equipment build, runoffs, acceptance testing, and issue resolution.
  • Develop process manufacturing requirements (MRs) for all fluid fill systems in General Assembly.
  • Develop, review, and maintain supplier-facing technical requirements, SOR content, equipment specifications, interface requirements, and acceptance criteria for fluid-fill systems.
  • Monitor expenditures for processes and/or equipment.
  • Provide technical direction through supplier design reviews, equipment build reviews, buyoff, capability validation, and rate confirmation. Escalate technical risks and ensure issues are closed with documented evidence.
  • Ensure fluid-fill equipment designs address machine safeguarding, fluid-handling hazards, environmental and regulatory requirements, electrical and controls safety, and RESS/high-voltage considerations where applicable. Participate in PFMEA/MFMEA, g-Risk, control-plan, error-proofing, traceability, and capability-study activities.
  • Incorporate lessons learned into global standards, requirements, training, and future business cases.
  • Provide technical coaching, mentoring, and knowledge transfer to engineers, plant teams, suppliers, and other stakeholders; maintain current technical knowledge of fluid-fill technologies, controls, instrumentation, and industry practices.

Your Skills & Abilities - Required Qualifications
  • 8+ years of professional experience with machinery, equipment and tooling, with a focus on fluid-fill, dispense, metering, evacuation, pressure/vacuum, leak-test, or closely related automated equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience taking automated manufacturing equipment from concept and requirements development through supplier execution, installation, commissioning, launch, and post-launch support.
  • Expert-level experience in automating machinery and equipment to reduce labor costs.
  • Expert-level experience applying automation to improve safety, quality, throughput, labor productivity, reliability, and total cost-not labor reduction alone.
  • Strong technical expertise in understanding and developing locating and dimensional strategies.
  • Experience problem solving and troubleshooting machinery and equipment.
  • Experience troubleshooting integrated mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, vacuum, hydraulic, fluid, instrumentation, controls, PLC/HMI, and automated equipment systems.
  • Experience developing or reviewing Manufacturing Requirements, equipment specifications, SORs, BOE/BOP content, acceptance criteria, and technical standards.
  • Experience leading supplier, integrator, or OEM technical reviews and resolving design, build, commissioning, and launch issues.
  • Experience creating technical cost estimates, investment recommendations, capital or project business cases, and benefit/payback analyses.
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge - Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 years of automotive or launch experience.
  • Knowledge of advanced planning and control methodologies and tools.
  • Familiarity with the latest trends and technologies in fluid fill equipment.
  • Experience with General Assembly machinery, equipment and tooling, with a focus on fluid metering, pressure and vacuum systems, leak detection, fill-volume verification, automatic compensation, fluid recovery, data collection, traceability, or related process controls.
  • Experience with vision systems, PLC and robot programming.
  • Certifications in analytical problem solving, such as Red-X or Six Sigma.
  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
