Position Summary
This position is responsible for providing legal advice to the Associate General Counsel(s), the General Counsel, employees and the management team.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Negotiate, draft, and revise legal agreements, such as vendor contracts, leases and other commercial agreements
  • Provide legal advice and counsel to management on a variety of legal matters
  • Ensure the cooperative's operations and activities comply with applicable laws and regulations
  • Conduct legal research and related to legal, regulatory, and corporate governance issues
  • Manage and direct litigation in consultation with superiors in assigned cases, including discovery responses, witness preparation, strategy, mediation, negotiation and resolution
  • Monitor and maintain awareness of industry legal issues and provide updates when required
  • Manage and oversee the activities of outside counsel
  • Provide employees with guidance in handling difficult or complex legal and regulatory matters, in addition to other matters involving risk and in resolving escalated complaints or disputes
  • Implement corporate and departmental policies and procedures in conjunction with management
  • Teach and instruct employees in duties that require coordination with the legal department and legal input
  • Establish prioritization of responsibilities and exercise time management skills
  • Establish metrics and prepare monthly reports for areas of responsibility
  • Coordinate activities with other departments
  • Maintain the security of confidential information
  • Stay abreast of advances in technology
  • Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance
  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of general corporate legal issues including contracting,
  • Knowledge of business and management principles including strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques and budgeting
  • Knowledge of using computer systems, which may include setting up and using hardware and software programs, entering data or processing information
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local law and regulations that affect the utility industry
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service
  • Skilled in risk assessment, analytical reasoning, and focusing on details.
  • Skilled in monitoring and managing performance
  • Skilled in prioritizing and time management
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to listen and understand information verbally and in writing

Minimum Qualifications - (Education, Experience)
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Juris Doctor degree
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas
  • Three years of experience practicing law preferred
  • Experience in real estate transactions and/or labor and employment law preferred
  • Valid Texas Driver's License
