Job description

Associate General Counsel

Location: Merrifield, Virginia (In-Person)
Compensation: $225,000 - $285,000 + Annual Bonus

About Us

We are a family-owned commercial real estate company with over 60 years of experience acquiring, developing, and managing retail and office properties. Our portfolio is concentrated in the Mid-Atlantic region, and we take a long-term, hands-on approach to ownership and operations.

The Role

We are seeking a pragmatic, business-minded attorney to serve as Associate General Counsel. This is a high-impact, in-house role focused on commercial real estate transactions, leasing, and legal oversight across our portfolio.

This position is ideal for an attorney looking to transition from a law firm, title company or real estate company into a role with direct involvement in deals and day-to-day business decision-making.

This is a fully in-person position based in Merrifield, Virginia, and requires regular interaction with tenants, vendors, brokers, and local stakeholders, as well as frequent site visits.

We are a small friendly office where everyone pitches in and does whatever is needed to keep the company running smoothly.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and manage the full lifecycle of commercial real estate acquisitions, including site/deal evaluation, negotiations, contract drafting, due diligence, title review, and all aspects of closings
Draft, review, and negotiate commercial leases, amendments, and related agreements
Prepare and negotiate vendor agreements, construction contracts, and other operational documents
Identify and manage legal risk across transactions and property operations
Oversee and manage outside counsel as needed
Manage public relations and marketing strategy

Provide legal and strategic support on tenant matters, billing, disputes, and lease enforcement
Oversee legal aspects of commercial evictions and coordinate court proceedings where appropriate
What We're Looking For

Strong negotiation and communication skills
Practical, business-oriented judgment
Ability to manage multiple matters and priorities simultaneously
High level of professionalism and attention to detail
Interest in working in a collaborative, hands-on environment
Benefits

Annual performance-based bonus
Paid time off

Qualifications

Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
Active member of the Virginia Bar in good standing (or eligible to waive in)
3+ years of relevant experience in commercial real estate law
(law firm, in-house, or title company experience preferred)
Strong experience with commercial leasing and real estate transactions

Additional Requirements

Ability to work on-site in Merrifield, VA five days per week
Willingness to attend in-person meetings and property visits as needed
