An Associate General Counsel is a senior lawyer within an organization's legal department who assists the General Counsel in providing legal advice and support to the company. Their responsibilities often include drafting and reviewing contracts, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing litigation, and advising on employment, intellectual property, and corporate matters. They may also supervise other attorneys or legal staff and work closely with different departments to minimize legal risks. The role requires strong legal expertise, communication skills, and the ability to handle complex legal issues efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate general counsel, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate General Counsel, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, a state bar license, and strong expertise in legal research, analysis, and drafting. Familiarity with contract management systems, legal research tools like Westlaw or LexisNexis, and compliance software is typically required. Exceptional negotiation, problem-solving, and interpersonal communication skills help in managing risk and advising business leaders. These skills enable effective legal guidance, risk mitigation, and alignment of legal strategies with organizational goals.

What are some typical challenges faced by an associate general counsel in balancing legal risk with business objectives?

As an Associate General Counsel, one of the primary challenges is finding the right balance between minimizing legal risk and enabling the organization's business goals. Job description

Flex is a growth-stage, NYC headquartered FinTech company that is creating the best rent payment experience. Itโ€™s hard to believe that itโ€™s 2026 and paying rent on time is expensive, inflexible, and difficult. Weโ€™re here to change that! Flex enables our users to pay rent throughout the month on a schedule that better fits their finances and budget. Our mission is to empower as many renters as possible with flexibility over their most significant recurring expense. After deliberately keeping a stealth profile as we built up unprecedented investor support and an enthusiastic user base, we are looking for motivated individuals to help us keep our mission growing. Will you be a part of the team?

About The Role

Flex is hiring an Associate General Counsel, Product & Regulatory to join our Product & Regulatory Legal team. This role leads cross-functional legal projects with company-wide impact โ€” partnering directly with senior leaders across Product, Engineering, Finance, and BD to shape how Flex navigates a complex and evolving consumer financial regulatory landscape. Youโ€™ll drive multiple strategic decisions simultaneously and own significant portions of the legal function roadmap.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Lead cross-functional legal projects from intake to resolution โ€” setting strategy, driving decisions, and coordinating across teams
  • Serve as the senior legal partner for product and engineering, providing real-time guidance on new features, product enhancements, and go-to-market strategy
  • Own regulatory change management end-to-end: monitor federal and state developments (CFPB, state AGs, state legislatures), assess business impact, and recommend a path forward
  • Advise senior leaders on consumer regulatory risk, enforcement trends, and litigation exposure across Flexโ€™s product lines
  • Review and negotiate BD and partner agreements for consumer regulatory risk
  • Identify opportunities to integrate new legal tools and workflows; coordinate with IT and Security to expand legal tech infrastructure
  • Own the legal AI governance framework โ€” define acceptable use standards, output review protocols, and escalation criteria; represent Legal in cross-functional AI working groups
What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • 7+ years of legal experience with deep consumer financial services expertise โ€” fintech, bank, CFPB/state agency, or outside counsel in this space
  • Strong grasp of the consumer financial regulatory stack: CFPB rulemaking, Reg Z/TILA, UDAP/UDAAP, money transmission, state licensing (servicing, brokering)
  • Proven track record advising product and engineering teams directly and influencing decisions at the senior leadership level
  • Experience leading complex, cross-functional legal projects with significant company-wide impact
  • Comfortable operating fast and with incomplete information โ€” gives useful guidance before all the facts are in
  • Clear, plain-English communicator; no one at Flex reads memos
  • JD from an accredited law school; active bar admission required
Nice to Have
  • Experience with rent-adjacent fintech, payments, or embedded finance products
Compensation

Flex takes a market-based approach to pay, ensuring compensation is commensurate with a candidateโ€™s experience and our internal leveling guidelines. For candidates located in our Tier 1 (NYC/Bay Area) and Tier 3 (Salt Lake City) markets, the base salary pay range for this role is below. Flex utilizes a geographic pay differential based on a cost of labor index. If you are located outside of the cities listed below, your starting pay will be adjusted to align with the market conditions of your specific geographic zone. Please speak with your recruiter for additional information regarding the specific range for your location.

Tier 1 (NYC/Bay Area)

  • $256,000โ€”$320,000 USD
Life at Flex

We understand that it takes a diverse team of highly intelligent, curious, determined, empathetic, and self aware people to grow a successful company. Our HQ is located in New York City, but we have employees located throughout the US, Australia, Canada and South America. We are growing quickly, but deliberately, with a focus on building an inclusive culture. Our dynamic team has incredible perspectives to share, just as we know you do, and we take great pride in being an equal opportunity workplace.
