About this role
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Transformer Field Assembly Technician to join our field operations team. This role involves the assembly, installation, inspection, testing, and commissioning of medium and high voltage power transformers at customer sites. The ideal candidate possesses strong mechanical aptitude, hands-on field assembly experience, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively under field conditions.
What you'll do
  • Assemble and install power transformers (480V to 500kV) and associated accessories including radiators, conservator tanks, bushings, and fans.
  • Perform oil processing and vacuum filling using filtration and degassing equipment to ensure transformer integrity.
  • Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on On-Load Tap Changers (OLTCs), including contact replacement and mechanical adjustments.
  • Support electrical testing such as power factor, winding resistance, ratio, and insulation resistance under the direction of field engineers.
  • Document all work performed, complete assembly checklists, and prepare comprehensive technical field reports.
  • Interface professionally with clients, transformer manufacturers, OEM representatives, and site contractors.
  • Operate cranes, forklifts, and rigging/lifting equipment safely and in accordance with site protocols.
  • Support dismantling and removal of existing transformer units as needed.

What you'll bring
  • High school diploma or technical trade school certification required; Associate degree in Electrical or Mechanical Technology preferred.
  • OSHA 10/30-hour certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
  • NETA Level 3 or Level 4 certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of field service experience in transformer assembly or related heavy industrial equipment.
  • Experience with OEM equipment from ABB, Siemens, GE, or similar manufacturers preferred.
  • Experience with OLTCs (e.g., Reinhausen, ABB, Siemens) and transformer oil processing equipment is a strong plus.
  • Knowledge of transformer monitoring systems installation and commissioning.
  • Familiarity with transformer core and coil assembly, gasket installation, bolt torquing procedures, and bushing handling.
  • Basic understanding of electrical safety practices and standards (e.g., NFPA 70E, IEEE standards).
  • Ability to read technical documentation and interpret complex diagrams and manuals.
  • Strong technical reporting and documentation skills.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills; able to work under pressure during commissioning.
  • Valid Driver's License required; CDL-A preferred.
  • Ability to travel up to 70%, including overnight stays.
  • Willingness to work weekends, overtime, and extended shifts when needed.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including operating rigging/lifting equipment and working in varying field conditions.
  • Ability to lift and move transformer components and associated equipment as required by the job site.
