What does an associate engineer do?

An Associate Engineer is an entry-level professional who assists in designing, developing, and maintaining engineering projects. They work under the supervision of senior engineers, helping with technical tasks such as drafting plans, conducting tests, and collecting data. Their responsibilities may also include troubleshooting issues, preparing reports, and ensuring projects comply with industry standards. Associate Engineers typically work in fields like civil, mechanical, electrical, or software engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate engineer?

To thrive as an Associate Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and typically a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or MATLAB, and sometimes certifications like EIT (Engineer-in-Training), are commonly required. Strong teamwork, adaptability, and effective communication are soft skills that help you stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for successfully executing technical tasks, collaborating on projects, and supporting senior engineers in achieving organizational goals.

What are some typical challenges associate engineers face when transitioning from academic projects to real-world engineering teams?

Associate Engineers often find that moving from academic projects to professional engineering teams involves adapting to faster-paced timelines, working within established processes, and collaborating with colleagues from various disciplines. Unlike academic work, where projects might be more theoretical or self-directed, real-world engineering requires balancing multiple tasks, following industry standards, and communicating effectively to ensure project success. Over time, most associate engineers develop strong problem-solving and teamwork skills, which are essential for advancement and continued success in the field.

What is the difference between Associate Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectAssociate EngineeringMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsAssociate degree or diploma, some certificationsBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, licensure often not required initially
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, technical support, manufacturing, constructionDesign, analysis, research, manufacturing, often more autonomous
Employer & Industry UsageConstruction firms, manufacturing companies, government agenciesEngineering firms, manufacturing, aerospace, automotive industries

Associate Engineering roles typically require an associate degree and focus on technical support and implementation tasks. Mechanical Engineering positions usually demand a bachelor's degree and involve design, analysis, and problem-solving responsibilities. Both roles are essential in engineering projects but differ in education level, scope, and responsibilities.

What can I do with an associate engineering degree?

An associate engineering degree prepares individuals for technician, technologist, or support roles in fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering. Graduates can work in design, testing, maintenance, or manufacturing environments, often using tools like CAD software and adhering to safety standards. The degree can also serve as a stepping stone to further education or certifications in specialized engineering areas.

What is the salary of an associate engineer?

The salary of an associate engineer typically ranges from $60,000 to $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced associates or those with specialized skills can earn higher wages.

Job description

Infotechยฎ is seeking an Associate Director of QA Automation to be a hands-on technical leader of the QA Engineering team.ย

Who we are looking for

As the Associate Director of QA Automation, you will be responsible for driving the overall strategy, architecture, development, and execution of automated testing across our Commercial applications. You will be a self starter who is excited about building out a green field QA function across a heavily used suite of projects. In addition to operating as a senior individual contributor, you will balance deep technical work, building scalable test frameworks and integrating them into CI/CD pipelines, with mentoring team members, establishing coding standards, and advocating for quality early in the development lifecycle. Working closely with cross-functional engineering and product teams, you will ensure high release confidence, minimize defect leakage, and eliminate test flakiness to maintain a fast, reliable continuous deployment workflow.

What youโ€™ll do
  • Architect, build, and maintain robust, scalable test automation frameworks (UI, API, Mobile, Performance) across web and backend systems.
  • Establish automation guidelines, coding standards, and best practices across the engineering organization.
  • Integrate automated test suites into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab) to enable seamless continuous testing and reliable deployment gates.
  • Mentor and guide QA engineers on test automation techniques, design patterns (e.g., Page Object Model), clean code principles, and effective debugging.
  • Partner with Product, Design, and Software Engineers early in the development lifecycle to clarify requirements, review design specs, and plan for testability.
The technical chops needed for this role

We know that the best engineers can pick up new tech quickly when needed, so donโ€™t be deterred if you donโ€™t have every item on the list below.

Must have tech stacks:

Nice to have:ย

Advanced proficiency in at least one OOP/functional language used in automation (Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, or C#)ย

RESTful/GraphQL API testing and automation (Postman, RestAssured, Supertest)ย

Hands-on expertise building automation frameworks from scratch (Playwright, Cypress, Selenium WebDriver, or Appium)ย

Containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes)ย

Experience integrating automated test suites into CI/CD pipelinesย

Solid command of SQL and database validation for data quality verificationย

Experience testing .NET/C# applications with MSSQL back-ends.

Experience using FitNesse (open-source acceptance testing framework) to test .NET/C# applications with MSSQL back-ends.

What it's like to be on the QA Automation team

  • Comfortable with ambiguity and shifting priorities, and quick to adapt when timelines compress.
  • Curious builders exploring how AI and agentic tooling can reshape testing, from automation frameworks to agent-driven regression workflows.
  • Focused on outcomes over hours logged. We care about what you ship, not when you clock in.
  • This team is for people who genuinely live and breathe quality engineering. QA should be your craft.ย
What we offerย
  • Comprehensive health benefits with inclusive wellness support
  • Flexible time off and paid holidays
  • Continuing education and leadership development programs
  • A culture built on empathy, connection, and trust โ€” recognized as a Great Place to Workยฎ
You must have
  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree in related field and 8 years relevant experience; or Masterโ€™s Degree in related field and 6 years relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
We would like you to have
    • 8+ years of total software QA/Testing experience, with at least 4+ years in a senior or technical lead capacity focused on test automation.
    • Proven ability to elevate the technical skill set of team members through code reviews, paired programming, and documentation.
    • Ability to balance immediate delivery goals with long-term architectural stability and technical debt reduction.
    • Exceptional analytical skills to troubleshoot complex system behaviors, network issues, and environment discrepancies.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively translate complex technical quality risks to non-technical stakeholders.
    • 2+ years working at a โ€œstart upโ€ on a small, fast paced, highly effective team. (โ€œStart upโ€ defined as any company of 100 or fewer employees).
