An associate engineering role typically requires a degree, but some technical sales, project management, or specialized trades can earn $10,000 or more monthly through experience, certifications, and commissions. High-paying roles in these fields often involve strong technical knowledge, industry certifications, and a proven track record of performance.

What does an Associate Engineer do?

An Associate Engineer is an entry-level professional who assists in designing, developing, and maintaining engineering projects. They work under the supervision of senior engineers, helping with technical tasks such as drafting plans, conducting tests, and collecting data. Their responsibilities may also include troubleshooting issues, preparing reports, and ensuring projects comply with industry standards. Associate Engineers typically work in fields like civil, mechanical, electrical, or software engineering.

What can you do with an Associate in engineering?

An associate degree in engineering prepares individuals for technical roles such as engineering technician, CAD drafter, or quality control inspector. Graduates can work in manufacturing, construction, or maintenance environments, often using tools like AutoCAD or MATLAB and may pursue certifications to advance their careers.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, and aerospace engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with experience, bonuses, and stock options. High-level roles often require advanced skills, certifications, and leadership responsibilities within competitive industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and typically a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or MATLAB, and sometimes certifications like EIT (Engineer-in-Training), are commonly required. Strong teamwork, adaptability, and effective communication are soft skills that help you stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for successfully executing technical tasks, collaborating on projects, and supporting senior engineers in achieving organizational goals.

What are some typical challenges Associate Engineers face when transitioning from academic projects to real-world engineering teams?

Associate Engineers often find that moving from academic projects to professional engineering teams involves adapting to faster-paced timelines, working within established processes, and collaborating with colleagues from various disciplines. Unlike academic work, where projects might be more theoretical or self-directed, real-world engineering requires balancing multiple tasks, following industry standards, and communicating effectively to ensure project success. Over time, most associate engineers develop strong problem-solving and teamwork skills, which are essential for advancement and continued success in the field.

What is the work of Associate engineer?

An Associate Engineer supports engineering projects by assisting with design, testing, and analysis tasks. They often work under the supervision of senior engineers, use tools like CAD software, and may need relevant technical certifications or degrees. Their responsibilities include troubleshooting, documentation, and ensuring project compliance with standards.

Job description

About the role

Crunchtime is looking for a highly motivated Associate Engineer Manager to join our Connex product development team.  The Connex team creates bi-directional real-time integration to every POS that our customers deploy. The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys integration, continual learning, and a fast-paced development environment. If you possess a drive for excellence, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and desire to be part of a team that is dedicated to being an industry leader, then we want to hear from you.

What you'll do as an Associate Engineering Manager
  • Manage a small engineering team (4-10 engineers), including hiring, performance management, and team development.
  • Act as the primary interface with customers, translating urgency (e.g., incidents, alarms, escalations) into clear internal priorities.
  • Publish daily team priorities each morning to align work streams and prevent priority conflicts.
  • Enable stakeholders to coordinate priorities through the manager rather than interrupting engineers directly.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers to ensure the team is building the right solutions for both short- and long-term needs.
  • Contribute to technical design discussions and guide the team in delivering quality solutions the right way.
  • Promote and reinforce Connex SOPs, solutions, reports, and resources, guiding users to self-service tools and office hours to reduce team interruptions.
  • Serve as Project Manager to ensure SOPs and project plans are followed, track external blockers, and drive resolution with stakeholders and vendors.
  • Identify and call out outstanding issues and operational risks.
  • Provide weekly reports on team progress and customer system status.
  • Work in an agile environment using collaboration tools such as Jira, Slack, and Zoom.
  • Stay aligned with broader engineering organization processes and initiatives.

What we're looking for
  • 5+ years experience as a software developer building production systems.
  • 1+ years managing engineers or acting in a technical lead capacity.
  • Technical understanding of APIs, integrations, and system behavior sufficient to identify bugs, blockers, and communicate effectively with engineering teams.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to manage external customers and internal engineering teams.
  • Ability to prioritize across multiple work streams and manage conflicting demands.
  • Experience coordinating engineering work while minimizing interruptions to development teams.
  • Solid project management and operational coordination skills.
  • Ability to identify risks, blockers, and drive resolution with stakeholders and vendors.
  • Experience building reports and dashboards to provide visibility into team progress, system status, and operational risks.
  • Organized and proactive with strong status reporting and communication skills.
  • Strong collaboration with product managers and engineers to deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Demonstrated leadership style that provides context, feedback, and guidance to help teams succeed.

Nice to haves
  • Familiarity with API technologies and system integrations.
  • Experience working with POS systems, integrations, or distributed systems.
  • Familiarity with incident management and system monitoring.
  • Experience managing customer escalations or external technical relationships.
  • Knowledge of SOP development and operational process improvement.
  • Experience with reporting tools or data platforms.
  • Experience working in agile teams or DevOps environments.
What you'll get
  • Great mission-driven team members from diverse backgrounds with a strong company culture
  • Competitive pay
  • Flexible PTO
  • Paid company holidays
  • Yearly team off-sites
  • International travel opportunities
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits (FSA, HSA & HRA options)
  • Basic & Voluntary Life Insurance
  • 401k employer match
  • Wellness benefits (Headspace, OneMedical, Omada, Ginger.io, Gympass, Carrot)
  • Commuter benefits
  • Work in an open environment on solutions that are reshaping the way businesses operate
  • Fun team events
  • Ability to have a big impact
  • 10 weeks of paid parental leave
  • Fitness reimbursement
  • Learning & development funds
Compensation:

The annual base compensation range for this position is $120,000 - $140,000. The reasonably estimated total cash compensation (base + variable) range for this full-time position will be $135,000 - $157,500.

Actual compensation is based on factors unique to each candidate, including, but not limited to: job-related skills, qualifications, education, experience, and location. Crunchtime has a location-based compensation system, so someone doing the same job in a different city might have a different pay range.
