JOB SUMMARY
The Associate Engineer is a mid-level position in the engineering department, responsible for professional engineering work related to the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of various public works projects. Under direction and minimal supervision, an Associate Engineer performs design of public works projects, coordinates with other project staff, activities and tasks, provides technical support for internal and external stakeholders, and acts as a supervisor to a small group of assistant engineers and/or technical staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform engineering calculations, and prepare plans, specifications and estimates for construction of public works projects.
  • Under direction and minimal supervision, perform complex engineering work for public works projects, ensuring technical competence and compliance with governing regulations.
  • Coordinate project activities with all stakeholders including but not limited to the project team, field personnel, agency staff, utility companies, other consultants, and contractors.
  • Maintain knowledge of the latest Caltrans and/or AASHTO design and construction standards and specifications.
  • Work closely with clients and project teams.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • 4+ years of progressive engineering experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Current California Engineer-In-Training or Professional Engineer License is highly desired.
  • Well versed in the principles and practices of engineering and applicable laws and codes related to public works projects with a high level of independent judgement.
  • Experience with methods, materials, and techniques used in the design and construction of public works projects.
  • Proven track record for successfully completing roadway design projects - e.g. pavement rehabilitation, complete streets, bicycle/pedestrian facilities, intersection, drainage, and stormwater quality measures.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and/or any hydrologic, hydraulic and stormwater management design software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
