What is an associate engineer?

Associate Engineers are entry-level engineering professionals who support more experienced engineers in designing, developing, testing, and maintaining various projects in their field. They typically work under supervision and assist with tasks such as drafting technical documents, conducting research, analyzing data, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Associate Engineers often gain practical experience and training to advance to higher-level engineering roles as they develop their skills.

What are some typical challenges associate engineers face when transitioning from academic projects to industry roles?

Associate Engineers often find the transition from academic projects to industry roles challenging due to differences in project scope, teamwork dynamics, and pace. In industry, you’ll likely work on larger, multi-disciplinary teams where effective communication and collaboration are crucial. Job description

Help Rainbow Municipal Water District build something thatdoesn'texist yet here: an in-house CIP program for pipeline replacements, large wastewater projects, and pump station upgrades. You'llrun hydraulic models, develop alignments in Civil 3D, shepherd projects from concept to construction, and review private development plans for standards compliance — then work directly with our new in-house construction crew onceit'sactive.

We'rea small, agile agency serving northern San Diego County. We move fast — three pump stations from bid tobuiltin 10 months — and we need someone who can match that pace. This role is designed to meet you where your experience fits: Assistant, Associate, or journey-level Engineer, with room to grow. The most important thing is a love of hands‑on design and a desire for breadth over a siloed specialty.

Open at three experience levels:

Assistant ($115,289–$161,405)

Associate ($126,818–$177,545)

Engineer ($139,500–$195,300)
