Job description

Position Summary

Under the direction of shop management and Engineering, the Electrical Designer uses engineering principles and design software, to help design, develop, and maintain electrical control systems and/or components to required specifications, focusing on economy, safety, reliability, quality, and sustainability.

Job Responsibilities

Electrical Design (90% of duties)

  • Perform design work for projects utilizing principles of electrical engineering, design skills on both drawings and computer software.
  • Establishing construction, manufacturing, or installation standards or specifications by performing a wide range of detailed calculations.
  • Inspects completed installations and observes operations to ensure conformance to design and equipment.
  • Review drawings to ensure technical and regulatory compliance.
  • Able to provide information and technical support to internal and external customers that meet customer and company expectations.
  • Responsible for reviewing jobs to ensure the job meets or exceeds Customer expectations.
  • Coordinate with customers regarding specification/design questions and clarifications.
  • Work with Purchasing and Vendors to receive quotes and lead time to complete design.
  • Electrical Testing (10% of duties)
  • Performs power testing of protective relay panels, medium voltage switchgear line-ups, test communication, and HMI components on the relay panel. Testing also involves switchboards, automatic transfer switches, and other power distribution components.
  • Reviews project specifications and implement testing procedures to comply with project requirements.
  • Reviews test plans of large projects against schematics.
  • Maintains test folders for all projects with relevant test reports, test drawings, and test pictures.
  • Maintaining electrical test equipment.
  • Leads problem-solving initiatives to analyze quality failures and help drive quality improvements (ex. ways to improve the efficiency of testing to reduce the time required).
  • Maintain familiarity with ISO 9001:2015 QMS & CSA standards (particularly CSA C22.1 & CSA C22.2 NO.31)
  • Follows all company, provincial, federal, and safety policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • Diploma, associate’s degree in related field, certification, journeyperson or equivalent of 5 years combined experience.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook). Experience working with 3D design an asset.
  • Understanding of basic electrical and control system principles and a familiarity with reading electrical schematics, three-line diagrams and control / communication diagrams. Experience with switchgear design preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, organizational skills (coordinate multiple group efforts with the company to achieve results) and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to work overtime (nights and weekends) to complete jobs in progress.
  • This is a union position. The selected candidate must be willing and able to join the union.

Additional Information

Travel: Up to 5%

Compensation: $26.40 - $33.10/hour

Physical Demands: Lifting to a maximum of 50 lbs. without assistance or use of a lifting aid, crawling, climbing, standing for long periods of time, and working in non-ideal conditions.
