What does an associate editor do?

An Associate Editor is responsible for supporting the editorial process at a publication or media outlet. Their tasks usually include reviewing submissions, editing articles for clarity and accuracy, coordinating with writers and contributors, and helping manage deadlines. Associate Editors often assist in shaping content strategy and may contribute their own writing as well. They work closely with senior editors to ensure the quality and consistency of published materials.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate editor?

To excel as an Associate Editor, you need strong writing, editing, and research skills, often backed by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), style guides (like AP or Chicago), and editing software is typically required. Attention to detail, organization, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing deadlines and collaborating with writers. These abilities ensure content accuracy, quality, and timely publication in a fast-paced editorial environment.

What are some common challenges an associate editor might face when balancing multiple projects and deadlines?

Associate Editors often juggle several articles or publications at once, each with its own timeline and set of contributors. A common challenge is prioritizing tasks effectively to meet tight deadlines while maintaining editorial quality and accuracy. This role requires strong organizational skills and clear communication with writers, senior editors, and other team members to ensure everyone is aligned. Developing efficient workflows and being adaptable to sudden changes—such as urgent revisions or shifting editorial calendars—are essential for success in this fast-paced environment.

Job description

Join Our Marketing Team!

RTO National is looking for a creative, energetic, and highly dependable Marketing Specialist to help bring our brands, products, and company culture to life across digital, print, and internal communication channels.

This is a dynamic, hands-on role with a wide variety of projects and recurring responsibilities. On any given day, you may be editing product photos, creating digital content, updating online listings, producing a newsletter, preparing materials for an event, or refreshing marketing collateral across multiple product lines.

We are looking for someone who brings both energy and excellence to their work-someone who enjoys staying busy, moves projects forward with purpose, and takes pride in producing polished results. The right person will be able to shift comfortably between creative assignments, detailed administrative work, recurring deadlines, and unexpected requests without losing momentum or attention to quality.

This role is a strong fit for someone who thrives in a fast-moving environment, enjoys variety, and is motivated by seeing their work completed, published, and put into use.

What You'll Do

As a Marketing Specialist, you will:

  • Edit and prepare photos of sheds, carports, and other resale inventory for online listings.
  • Create and distribute a weekly newsletter supporting the retail and resale areas of the business.
  • Review company social media profiles to maintain accurate, current, and engaging content.
  • Design monthly digital content for social media and other online channels.
  • Review and update product information on company Google Business Profiles each week.
  • Assist with refreshing and redesigning older brochures, flyers, and other collateral across multiple product lines.
  • Prepare promotional items and swag shipments for sales events, trade shows, and expos.
  • Support internal communication platforms (digital announcements, email, etc.).
  • Help maintain consistent branding, messaging, and visual quality across marketing materials.
  • Coordinate with internal teams to gather information, photos, deadlines, and project requirements.
  • Keep multiple recurring projects organized and moving forward at the same time.
  • Respond to changing priorities and new requests with flexibility, urgency, and a solutions-focused attitude.
  • Provide additional creative and administrative support to the marketing team as needed.
What Will Help You Succeed

You may be a strong fit for this position if you:

  • Bring visible energy, initiative, and enthusiasm to your work.
  • Enjoy a fast pace, frequent variety, and having several projects in motion at once.
  • Can move work forward efficiently without sacrificing accuracy or presentation.
  • Take ownership of assignments and follow through without requiring frequent reminders.
  • Are comfortable shifting priorities when business needs change.
  • Look for ways to improve a project rather than simply completing the minimum requirements.
  • Have a strong eye for visual quality, branding, and small details.
  • Communicate confidently and professionally with colleagues across the organization.
  • Ask thoughtful questions, seek clarity early, and remain responsive throughout a project.
  • Can accept feedback professionally and apply it quickly.
  • Balance creativity with dependable execution of routine and recurring responsibilities.
  • Stay organized without becoming stalled by overplanning or a need for perfect conditions.
  • Take pride in producing polished, accurate, and professional work on time.
Preferred Experience
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, graphic design, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience creating, editing, or coordinating digital and print marketing content.
  • Experience with photo-editing or graphic-design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar tools.
  • Strong writing, proofreading, and visual-editing skills.
  • Experience creating social media, email, web, or newsletter content.
  • Familiarity with marketing on Google Business Profiles, LinkedIn, Facebook, or similar platforms is helpful but not required.
  • A portfolio or examples of previous design, content, photography, social media, or marketing work are strongly encouraged.
