Position Summary
The Department of Psychiatry is seeking a Director of Finance who will direct and provide leadership for all financial administrative functions which include, planning and fiscal management/analysis of all departmental budgets, financial reporting to leadership, clinical and research budgets, performance monitoring, contract negotiations, forecasting/cash flow management, capital spending and oversee other professional and technical staff engaged in budgeting, purchasing, and fiscal operations.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Lead the department's accounting and financial operations and provide strategic financial analysis to support academic, clinical, research, and administrative decision-making. Serve as a trusted financial advisor to department leadership and provide management reports, analysis, and recommendations to support resource allocation and operational planning.
  • Direct the development, implementation, and ongoing management of operating and capital budgets across multiple funding sources. Develop budget projections, monitor expenditures and available balances, analyze variances, and support multi-year financial planning to ensure resources are appropriately allocated and aligned with departmental objectives.
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting and financial activities, including accounting transactions, journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end and year-end processes. Prepare, review, and interpret financial statements and reports and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial information.
  • Ensure departmental budgets, expenditures and financial transactions comply with the University policies, funding restrictions, State and federal requirements, sponsor guidelines, and applicable regulatory requirements. Maintain appropriate internal controls and serve as a primary departmental liaison for financial reviews and internal and external audits.
  • Review financial and operational information, workflows, and reporting processes to identify risks, process failures, and opportunities for improvement. Develop and implement improvements that enhance efficiency, transparency, and financial reporting and analytics.
  • Formulate, implement, and interpret financial and operational policies and procedures consistent with departmental, campus, and University requirements. Communicate and collaborate with University offices, campus officials, and other stakeholders regarding departmental financial matters and participate in campus- and system-level initiatives as appropriate.
  • Direct and oversee finance staffing, including recruitment, onboarding, training, work assignment, supervision, performance management, and professional development. Foster a collaborative, service-oriented culture focused on accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Provides financial information to other University Units.
  • Maintain knowledge of and proficiency with University financial accounting systems.
  • Administers activities related to the fulfillment of the role of the function of the office of finance.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
    • A minimum of 5 years experience with healthcare financial management in a University setting.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field.
    • Illinois Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
    • Knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and federal regulations.

    Benefits and Compensation
    The previously determined salary range for this position is $90,000.00 to $125,000.00.
