Assoc Data Scientist - GD08BE

As an Associate Data Scientist with The Hartford you will create analytical solutions to enhance the organization's pricing sophistication and competitive advantage specifically for the Personal Auto and Home lines of business. You will transform large data sets into actionable business insights using predictive modeling and machine learning solutions.Generalized linear models are a core technical component of this role, but you will also work with other machine learning techniques (e.g. gradient boosted trees) and MLOps frameworks. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary analytics team, collaborating closely with data engineering, performance analytics, business intelligence, and data scientist peers.You will use agile methodologies to deliver analytics support and modeling solutions to your business partners in Personal Lines Product Management.

The tools you may work with include:

  • Python, SQL or R
  • Linux and bash
  • IDEs such as Jupyter, VS Code, and RStudio
  • Git and GitHub
  • Environment control such as conda and Docker
  • Spark and/or Snowflake
  • Scientific reporting frameworks such as Quarto and R Markdown

About you:

  • You hold a Master's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Engineering, Physics, Actuarial Science, or similar analytical field; or you have commensurate work experience with a Bachelor's degree and interest in further education.
  • You have at least 2 years of relevant experience in the insurance industry, with a preference for applications in loss cost modeling or personal lines products
  • You can independently research solutions to your problems, but are not afraid to ask for help to refine those solutions
  • You have an obsession with process improvement and you identify and eliminate waste in work flows
  • You prioritize tasks within the context of your projects and can track and communicate progress toward your goals
  • You bring empathy and an open mind to the table when reviewing collaborators' business problems.
  • You love tracking down the root causes and identifying the tradeoffs of different solutions
  • You are a continuous learner with an interest in developing technical skills, business acumen, and relationship building
  • You build community around common interests and shared goals for the purpose of democratizing knowledge, championing best practices, and supporting others
  • You understand the importance of culture, collaboration, and inclusivity as essential ingredients of a high-output data team

What to expect:

Within one month, you will:

  • Meet the peers and business partners across Data Science, Data Engineering, Performance Analytics, Pricing, and Product Management.
  • Partner with more experienced team members to perform modeling experiments and become familiar with our approach.

Within three months, you will:

  • Deliver insights to business partners based on your findings from class plan modeling experiments.
  • Begin influencing what work is being performed, how it is being performed, and how stakeholders are being engaged.

Within one year, you will:

  • Contribute to projects in roles of escalating size and scope
  • Tackle larger, more strategic, engagements with business partners and peers.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
