Location Designation: Hybrid - 3 days per week
Role Overview:
The Data Governance Analyst plays a key role in advancing New York Life's data governance initiatives. This individual contributor role is responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing metadata management, data catalogs, lineage documentation, and governance workflows using platforms such as Atlan and Unity Catalog.
Working closely with data product managers, business SMEs, and technology teams, the analyst enhances data discoverability, quality, and compliance across the enterprise; supporting New York Life's Data Strategy and enabling timely, data-driven decisions built on trusted information.
What You'll Do:
โ€ข Curate and maintain glossaries, taxonomies, and metadata for business and technical assets.
โ€ข Design and implement governance workflows (e.g., stewardship approvals, certifications, data access protocols).
โ€ข Support PII/PHI classification, data quality checks, and lineage validation.
โ€ข Collaborate with data product managers, SMEs, and engineers to capture business context, align it with technical architectures and strengthen metadata documentation.
โ€ข Drive adoption of governance tools through road-shows, training sessions, user enablement, and data owner/steward playbooks.
โ€ข Participate in Agile ceremonies by contributing to backlog building and sprint events in Jira.
What You'll Bring:
โ€ข 5-7+ years of professional experience, including 2-3+ years in a data governance function.
โ€ข Bachelor's degree in Business, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
โ€ข Strong understanding of data governance frameworks, metadata management, and data cataloging/lineage concepts.
โ€ข Proven ability to translate business needs into governance policies, standards, and workflows.
โ€ข Excellent communication and collaboration skills and experience working across business and technical teams.
Required Skills:
โ€ข Hands-on experience with Atlan, Unity Catalog or similar metadata management tools. Familiarity with data quality and observability tools (e.g., Anomalo).
โ€ข Strong SQL skills with the ability to analyze and validate data lineage.
โ€ข Experience applying governance frameworks, glossary management, and stewardship processes.
โ€ข Working in Agile environments using Jira, Confluence, and SharePoint.
Preferred Skills:
โ€ข Proficiency with Data platforms and relevant Data Management tools such as Databricks, Redshift, dbt, FiveTran, Streamlit etc.
โ€ข Experience with data modelling, data analysis, data profiling etc.
โ€ข Working knowledge of SQL/Python for data analysis and automation.
โ€ข Exposure to AI-enabled governance accelerators or AI-assisted cataloging. Use tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, and similar applications for research, document analysis, summarization, workflow automation, QA, and prototyping.
โ€ข Experience supporting data modernization or cloud migration initiatives in enterprise settings.
Pay Transparency
Salary Range: $124,000-$177,000
Overtime eligible: Exempt

Actual base salary will be determined based on several factors but not limited to individual's experience, skills, qualifications, and job location. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. In addition to base salary, employees may also be eligible to participate in an incentive program.
