What are Associate Controllers?

Associate Controllers are finance professionals who support the Controller of an organization in managing accounting operations, financial reporting, and compliance. They assist with preparing financial statements, overseeing internal controls, and ensuring adherence to accounting standards and regulations. Associate Controllers may also supervise accounting staff, help with audits, and contribute to budgeting and forecasting processes. This role is often considered a step toward more senior finance leadership positions within a company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Controller, you need a robust understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and compliance, generally backed by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and often a CPA certification. Expertise in ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, advanced Excel skills, and knowledge of GAAP or IFRS standards are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, leadership, and effective communication help drive accuracy and collaboration across teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring reliable financial operations, regulatory compliance, and sound decision-making within an organization.

How does an Associate Controller typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

An Associate Controller often works closely with various departments such as operations, HR, and IT to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance. They may coordinate budget preparation sessions, clarify spending policies, and help interpret financial data for non-financial managers. Regular interaction with department heads is common, as the Associate Controller provides guidance on financial procedures and helps resolve discrepancies. This cross-functional collaboration is essential for maintaining strong internal controls and supporting organizational goals.

  • Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for tax filings and year-end reviews.
  • Stay informed on changes in relevant tax laws affecting the business.

Contracts & Legal Oversight

  • Review, summarize, and track key terms of contracts, including property leases, vendor agreements, loan documents, and dealership-related contracts.
  • Identify and communicate potential financial or legal exposure to ownership.
  • Coordinate with outside legal counsel on significant contracts or disputes as needed.

Insurance & Risk Management

  • Manage property, casualty, liability, auto, and other insurance policies for all entities.
  • Track policy renewals, review coverage adequacy, and handle claims when they arise.
  • Maintain relationships with insurance brokers and carriers to ensure cost-effective coverage.

Real Estate Oversight

  • Monitor property-related income and expenses, including rent collections, loan payments, and property taxes.
  • Assist with property purchases, sales, and refinancing transactions.
  • Oversee capital improvements and ensure proper accounting for real estate assets.

Strategic Support

  • Provide financial analysis and input on business decisions, expansions, or acquisitions.
  • Prepare ad hoc financial reports to support management decisions.
  • Help streamline processes and improve reporting systems where possible.

Team Leadership

  • Maintain a culture of accuracy, accountability, and professionalism.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of progressive experience in accounting and financial management; experience in real estate industries preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple entities and balance hands-on work with strategic oversight.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and attention to detail.
  • Must have a valid, unrestricted driver's license (you must be insurable).
  • Must maintain a clean, acceptable, and safe driving record.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment screening requirements, which include a social media check, a drug screen & physical, a background check, and a Motor Vehicle Report.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Health insurance and retirement plan options.
