The Soil Microbiologist is primarily a hands-on laboratory scientist who conducts experiments related to the effects of natural and synthetic soil amendments on soil microbial processes related to soil fertility and crop growth; contributes to the safety and science output of a working soils laboratory which uses a wide variety of raw materials; interacts with product development teams and their leaders; and is accountable for tightly focused research which helps develop products with clearly demonstrated mechanisms which drive our company's business growth. The soil microbiologist is expected to possess skills that blend molecular lab skills, field sampling techniques, and a deep understanding of nutrient cycling, soil health, and microbial ecology. The position is primarily visible to other researchers and product development teams.
What You'll Do:
  • Draft formal project proposals which are peer reviewed by internal colleagues
  • Write clear and detailed experimental protocols
  • Be fully responsible for hands-on research in the laboratory and greenhouse. Work side by side with shared technicians in our labs on site. Implement research, analyze data, draw and share conclusions, and evaluate project success vs. project goals. All research is documented in formal reports
  • Propose and modify existing soil science SOPs for use in our lab
  • Drive innovative solutions and take initiative in project work
  • Stay current with relevant professional / scientific societies. Read and share journal articles with colleagues
  • Use applied statistics software for data analysis
  • Assume responsibility for certain analytical instruments and lab areas. Assigned areas will be exemplary in terms of safety and compliance
  • Take ownership for continuous improvement in the safety culture of self and colleagues
  • Be a leader and example of the company's Culture of Care. Model respectful behavior in all communication, including digital, oral, and written interactions. Above all else, we value integrity, professionalism, and kindness in every interaction

What You'll Bring:
  • M.Sc. required, preferably in Soil Science, Agronomy or a related field; experience may be considered in lieu of education. Ph.D in the above discipline preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in agricultural research relating to, soil science, crop nutrition or biostimulants required. Additional experience preferred
  • Self-motivation, assertiveness, initiative, and results orientation
  • Proficiency in technical writing and presentations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and computer skills
  • Excellent project planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to think creatively and solve problems
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and drive results

Compensation & Benefits:
The salary range for this role, in Biola, California, is between $69,000 - $100,000. While we provide this range as general guidance, several factors are taken into consideration when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, candidate skill set, experience and training, licensure and certifications, work location, and other business and organizational needs. Actual salary and benefits may differ based upon location.
We provide an attractive benefits package that includes comprehensive medical, dental, vision coverage, and life insurance and well as disability coverage for positions working more than 30 hours per week. In addition, we have a retirement program that encourages our employees to save for the longer term, with generous matching employer contributions. Our benefit package also demonstrates our culture of care with paid vacation, sick days and holidays as well as paid personal and maternity/parental leaves and an Employee and Family Assistance Program. In addition to base pay, this role is also eligible to participate in our annual incentive plan, consistent with the terms of our program(s) where discretionary pay out of awards is reflecting components such as performance of the company and the employee.
